BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of the Director of Outdoor Education, provide learning experiences to classroom-size groups of students in various outdoor education areas on trail hikes and on field trips; supervise students in various recreational activities.

NATURALIST-INTERN with Stanislaus County Office of Education GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Stanislaus County Office of Education (S.C.O.E.) operates the Foothill Horizons Outdoor Education program for the 5th and 6th grade students of the county. The Outdoor Education Center is located five miles east of Sonora, California, at an elevation of 2,500 feet. Foothill Horizon Naturalists engage students in hands-on science lesson on our oak woodland campus. Interns will provide a rich and rewarding experience for 5th and 6th graders during their week of outdoor education. Naturalist Interns will plan and implement lessons on the train. Interns receive extensive at the beginning of the year in September. This training and guidance continues throughout the year to improve natural history knowledge, teaching skills and professional skills. Naturalist Interns also participate in evening activities, such as dance, campfire or night hikes. REQUIRED DOCUMENTS: Completed EdJoin Classified application. Passing health/drug screening assessment is required. Department of Justice Fingerprint clearance & Tuberculosis clearance is required prior to employment.
QUALIFICATIONS: Preferred experience with children and completion of college level course work in natural sciences, education, interpretation or outdoor recreation. (NOTE: These qualifications are for INTERN and not necessarily the same requirements as for the regular position of Naturalist.) SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES: Assist in planning, implementing and evaluating environmental education lessons. Assist in planning, implementing and evaluating recreational activities. Assist in supervising daily activities. This includes part of the following: flag ceremony, weather readings and mealtime coverage. ADVANTAGES TO INTERN: Receive a thorough experience in the operation of an outdoor education center. Receive a thorough training in the duties, responsibilities and education needed for a Natualist. Receive experience working daily with 5th and 6th grade children in an educational setting. Live and work on a beautiful campus.
