CLASS TITLE:  HVAC TECHNICIAN


JOB SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Director-Facilities, perform journey-level mechanical maintenance duties in the inspection, repair, installation and alteration of District heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems; perform preventive maintenance and routine servicing of equipment.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Perform journey-level mechanical maintenance duties in the inspection, repair, installation and alteration of District heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems; maintain District HVAC systems and components in safe and sanitary working condition perform preventive maintenance and routine servicing of equipment.
  • Install, inspect, repair and clean refrigeration and air conditioning equipment and systems; respond to emergency requests as needed.
  • Conduct periodic safety inspections on boilers and pumps as required; maintain heating systems, including forced air, hot water and low-pressure steam; repair heating coils; balance controls and clean and adjust burners and pilots; clean and repair boilers, circulating pumps and strainers.
  • Change relays, fan motors, compressors and broken lines; charge and evacuate cooling systems; lubricate and pack heating, ventilation, refrigeration and air-conditioning motors, pumps, fans and other equipment.
  • Install various HVAC systems; determine tie-in points, set fixtures, move vents and rough plumbing and reinstall fixtures; install and calibrate refrigeration and air conditioning systems; install copper tubing and repair pipes and tubing as necessary; test joints and insulate pipes.
  • Repair or replace defective parts in units, equipment and controls, including thermostats, switches, fan controls, damper motors, relays, filters, belts, compressors, heat exchangers, pressure controls and safety valves; repair and maintain furnace gas controls and engines, filters and condensing units; inspect, detect and repair leaks.
  • Operate a variety of hand and power tools such as welding equipment and cutting torch, plumbing tools and power equipment such as pipe threading equipment, trencher, cutting torch, and other hand and power tools; test equipment utilized in the HVAC trade; drive a District vehicle to conduct work; maintain vehicle and equipment in a clean, safe and proper working condition.
  • Estimate materials and labor needed; maintain records related to work performed; requisition needed supplies and materials according to established procedures.
  • Communicate with other personnel and various outside agencies to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns.
  • Maintain records and reports related to work orders and assigned activities.

 

OTHER DUTIES:

Perform related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the journey-level HVAC trade.
  • Health and safety regulations.
  • Applicable building codes, ordinances and regulations of State and local authorities pertaining to HVAC and refrigeration and applicable national and other State codes and regulations.
  • Safe working practices in an occupied public facility.
  • Technical aspects of field of specialty.
  • Air compressors and pneumatic controls.
  • Maintaining cooling towers and boilers.
  • Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies.
  • Basic record-keeping techniques.
  • Shop math.

ABILITY TO:

  • Perform skilled duties and the installation, maintenance and repair and installation of HVAC equipment and systems.
  • Estimate material requirements and order parts and supplies according to established guidelines.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Observe health and safety regulations and procedures.
  • Make accurate arithmetical computations.
  • Maintain routine records related to work performed.
  • Observe legal and defensive driving practices.
  • Operate a variety of tools and power equipment utilized in the basic trade.

  • Interpret and work from plans, diagrams shop drawings, sketches and specifications.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination equivalent to:  graduation from high school or equivalent GED supplemented by completion of an approved apprenticeship program in HVAC and two years journey-level HVAC experience.

 

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid California Class C driver’s license.
  • Valid EPA Refrigerant certificate.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:
