ANAHEIM UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT CLASS TITLE: SCHOOL LIBRARY/MEDIA TECHNICIAN BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of a principal or an assigned supervisor, perform a variety of technical and specialized library media center functions; oversee and participate in circulation activities; provide general and reference assistance to students and teachers. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: Perform a variety of technical library support duties involved with the selection, acquisition, circulation, maintenance and distribution of books, and materials. E Process and prepare library materials for classifying, cataloging and storage; prepare and maintain a variety of information and data storage and filing systems including circulation and instructional materials. E Provide general and reference assistance to students and teachers; instruct and aid students in the use of various library equipment; assist students in the use of computer indexes; answer reference and directional questions. E Assist in the instruction of library skills and in the use and care of instructional media and equipment; tutor students in the use of computer hardware and software. E Oversee and participate in circulation activities; check and prepare materials for return to the circulating collection; evaluate and maintain orderliness of shelved materials. E Perform general clerical work such as typing, duplicating, entering information into a computer and maintaining various files and records; compile, prepare and type correspondence, lists, reports, records and a variety of other materials including a library calendar and appointment schedule. E Assist with the evaluation and maintenance of library materials; pull and route materials in need of mending, binding or discarding; assess need for replacement or repair; mend and repair materials. E Contact students with overdue library materials; prepare charge slips, and receive library fees; count and record cash received. E Receive, input and process new library materials, audio visual equipment and textbook orders; compile lists of potential purchases; type purchase requisitions; monitor assigned library budgets; verify orders and prepare materials for circulation; attach proper labels and input into computer system. E Maintain library media center files and records, including card catalogs and inventory control records; compile lists of overdue books, instructional aids and audio visual materials. E Operate and maintain a variety of office and library equipment including a copier, computer, bar scanner, fax machine, VCR, television and laminator; communicate with District and vendors regarding equipment repairs. E Organize and prepare library displays, decorations and bulletin boards; maintain the library media center in a safe, clean and orderly condition; assist in maintaining appropriate student behavior in the library. E Attend a variety of meetings, workshops and conferences related to assigned activities. Train and provide work direction to student assistants. Select and read books aloud to students to promote interest in reading. Perform related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: Library methods, equipment, procedures and terminology. Appropriate selections and reading levels of students. Library classification systems. Location of materials in the library. Basic math. Operation of a variety of office equipment including a computer. Record-keeping techniques. Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary. Oral and written communication skills. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy. ABILITY TO: Perform a variety of technical and specialized library media center functions. Provide general and reference assistance to students and teachers. Process and prepare library materials for classifying, cataloguing and storage. Make routine math calculations. Maintain records and files. Complete work with many interruptions. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Operate a variety of office and library equipment including a computer. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Type at an acceptable rate of speed. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from high school, *an associate degree with coursework in library science or a related field and two years of clerical or library experience. SUBSTITUTION: Forty-eight units of college level coursework, or qualifying score on District “Instructional Proficiency” examination may be substituted for the required associate degree. Both options must include some college level coursework in library science or a related field. WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: School Library environment. Constant interruptions. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Dexterity of hands, wrists, and fingers to operate a computer keyboard. Seeing to read a variety of materials and monitor student behavior.
