MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Direct responsibility for counseling with pupils and parents who exhibit severe academic, social, emotional or attendance problems which adversely affect optimum educational development.
2. Provide personal, crisis and social counseling services to students; conduct student conferences and refer students to appropriate agencies as needed; assist students with decision making, proper behaviors and goal setting.
3. Meet with pupils and parents to explain student records, educational options, coursework, progress and needs related to passing the CAHSEE.
4 Provide classroom group guidance sessions in conjunction with classroom teachers on peer relationships, self-concept development and decision-making skills.
5. Assist in developing the master schedule.
6. Participate as a team member in developing school program goals as appropriate.
7. Serve as a resource to teachers and parents on questions concerning student’s social and emotional needs.
8. Investigate and implement District policy in emergency situations involving pupils (suicide threats, battered children, sex offenses, pregnancies, narcotics and assaults) which occur or are discovered in the school setting, acting upon request of school administrators and working with parents, legal authorities, medical doctors and others concerned.
9. Maintain necessary confidential records and reports.
10. Serve as liaison between parents and the school and make home visits if necessary.
11. Develop knowledge of referral sources within the community so that people with specific needs can be directed to services as needed.
12. Evaluate the effectiveness of the counseling program on a periodic basis and report on results to the administrator.
13. Attend staff meetings, Student Support Team meetings, teacher conferences and other meetings as necessary.
14. Act as a member of the School Crisis Team and achieve and maintain knowledge of regulations and laws dealing with youth, current policies and procedures of all community mental health and social agencies.
15. Assist in campus supervision as assigned by principal.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Valid Pupil Personnel Credential
2. The ability to communicate so others will clearly understand.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Bilingual skills in Spanish
