INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC, MIDDLE SCHOOL
General Description:
The responsibility of the teacher is to build a positive, engaging, and rich community of learners and to carry out a program of instruction which enables students to utilize skills taught to discover, problem solve, predict, apply, and to be motivated to learn more. The program is based on the Essential Outcomes, other School Board goals and objectives, and the State of California standards. Under the direction of the principal, the teacher is responsible for planning and implementing the educational program for her/his students, for teaching skills, and for providing the opportunity and the guidance needed for intellectual, social, emotional, and physical growth.
Essential Functions
- Reflects an understanding of learning theory, curriculum guides, and state and local requirements in planning and instruction.
- Identifies the learning needs of students (style, modality)
- Develops/utilizes instructional materials and techniques to meet identified needs.
- Evaluates and records children’s academic and social growth on a continual basis, including completing report cards. Adjusts teaching based on these results.
- Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to facilitate learning in an optimum environment.
- Conducts formal and informal parent conferences to discuss student progress, describe the school program, and answer questions. Communicates informally with parents in meetings, phone conversations, and through email.
- Provides for the well-being and safety of all students.
- Collaborates as an effective school team member and district team member.
- Provides leadership through work on committees, action teams, and by thoroughly engaging in school and district initiatives.
10. Maintains professional competence through in-service, classes, and dialogue and willingly engages in meaningful professional growth activities.
11. Provides a functional and attractive learning environment.
12. Serves as a guide, resource, model, facilitator, and motivator for student learning.
13. Utilizes and embeds technology in the learning environment to enhance learning, to find and assimilate information, create content, demonstrate learning, practice skills, express ideas, and build solutions.
14. Engages students to create, explore, research curate, publish, write, present, edit, and film while effectively utilizing a myriad of different tools and exhibiting digital citizenship.
15. Utilizes district resources, infrastructure, training, and support to adapt to new technologies that can contribute to effective learning and teaching.
16. Stays current on new instructional techniques and technologies and their use in the classroom and is willing to learn additional instructional strategies and technologies.
17. Demonstrates excellent attendance and punctuality.
Essential Functions, Instrumental Teacher
- Demonstrates proper technique and artistry in a variety of instruments and teaches these techniques effectively.
- Plans and implements a high quality program of instrumental music instruction for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students.
- Plans and conducts concerts, performances, and competitions for students. These sometimes require travel, which necessitates additional planning, coordination, budgeting, and other logistical support.
- Leads various bands and instrumental groups including, but not limited to, beginning band, concert band, symphonic band, and jazz band. Some of these require before and after school practices.
- Coordinates parent volunteers.
- With direction, plans and implements a budget.
- Collaborates closely with the elementary school instrumental program to ensure that there is effective articulation and a comprehensive course of study.
- Conducts other elective classes which may include vocal music, instruction in strings, other fine arts electives, or other electives. Vocal elective may include articulation with elementary vocal. Demonstrates proper technique and artistry in vocal music.
Tools/Equipment
Teacher uses an electronic presentation system which includes, but is not limited to, computer, interactive whiteboard, document camera, projector, and media player. Teacher utilizes a photocopy machine, fax machine, and other standard office equipment. Teacher utilizes instruments, music stands, sound equipment, and other equipment necessary for running an instrumental music program.
Physical Demands
The job of teaching includes standing, walking, sitting, bending, lifting 20 pounds, reaching, pulling, pushing, kneeling, crouching, use of hands, hearing, and vision.
Speech/Language Processing
A teacher must effectively, precisely, and persuasively communicate both verbally and in writing. Visual, auditory, and reading comprehension must be high, and short and long term memory is necessary. Speaking effectively in person, in small groups, in large groups, and on the telephone is required.
Human Relations
A teacher must interact professionally and diplomatically with the public, co-workers, students, and others. A teacher must have the ability to function independently, be a decision maker and problem solver, and accept supervisory authority.
Environmental Conditions
This area has temperate climactic conditions, so extremes are rare. Noise is at an acceptable level in all teaching spaces. Rarely are vibrations, hazards, or pollutant atmospheric conditions notes.
Temperament
A teacher must be able to direct others, express personal ideas and feelings, influence others, be flexible, perform a variety of duties, and have excellent responsibility and follow-through.

Crocker Middle School seeks a 0.6 to 1.0 FTE Vocal/ Instrumental Music Teacher. Experience teaching various band orchestration to 6-8 grade level students is greatly preferred; experience teaching in public middle school is desirable.
