Job Summary

Under the direction of the the Director of Transportation, drive a school bus to transport students safely and efficiently to an assigned location on a designated route; perform regular safety inspections on bus.

Essential Duties:

  • Drive a school bus along a designated route; pick up and discharge students in accordance with time schedules.

  • Observe legal and defensive driving practices.

  • Assure compliance with applicable traffic and student transportation laws, codes and regulations.

  • Maintain order and discipline among passengers on the bus and while waiting at bus stops in accordance with policies related to disciplining students.

  • Prepare discipline-related reports as necessary.

  • Determine appropriate action in emergency situations according to established guidelines.

  • Administer first aid to passengers as needed.

  • Conduct required daily safety inspections of buses.

  • Insect the interior, exterior and engine on buses to assure safe operational condition.

  • Report mechanical malfunctions or other problems as required.

  • Add fuel, oil and other fluids as needed.

  • Prepare and maintain inspection and driving records.

  • Maintain buses in a clean and safe operating condition; wash, sweep and clean buses; refuel, service and prepare vehicle for operation.

  • Transport students, faculty and parents on field trips, sporting events, camps, competitions or other events as assigned.

  • Meet scheduled departure and arrival times as assigned.

  • Prepare and maintain driving logs and reports as required.

  • Control traffic during loading and unloading of students.

  • Utilize two-way radios for bus-to-bus and bus-to-base communications.

  • Attend safety and/or other training meetings and programs as required.

  • Assist in the development of routes as assigned.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of safe and defensive driving practices, proper operations of school buses and applicable traffic and student transportation laws, codes and regulations.

  • Knowledge of basic First Aid procedures, along with health and safety regulations.

  • Knowledge of basic record-keeping techniques.

  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.

  • Ability to drive a school bus safely and efficiently, while observing legal and defensive driving practices.

  • Ability to maintain a safe discipline level among passengers; apply policies and procedures related to student discipline on buses.

  • Ability to maintain bus in clean and proper working condition by conducting safety inspections and performing routine preventive maintenance.

  • Ability to perform First Aid & CPR.

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions and communicate effectively with others, including using a two-way radio.

  • Ability to maintain routine records and meet schedules and timelines.


Physical Requirements:

  • Sitting for extended periods of time while operating buses.

  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information.

  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate transportation equipment.

  • Reaching overhead, above shoulders and horizontally.

  • Lifting moderately heavy children or objects.

  • Lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling heavy object, specifically:

    • Employee lifts/carries 60 pounds occasionally, 40 pounds frequently, and 15 pounds constantly.

    • Employee’s position requires pushing/pulling a maximum force of 100 pounds on objects.

  • Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to inspect and wash buses.

  • Seeing to monitor passengers and operate a vehicle.
