Requirements / Qualifications
All new candidates interested in guest/substitute teaching in the San Juan Unified School District must meet the following requirements:
• Hold a teaching credential based on a degree and student teaching
OR
• Be eligible to apply for an Emergency 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit.
Effective January 1, 2023 through July 31, 2024 the commission is waiving the basic skills requirement
To be eligible to apply for an Emergency 30-day permit you must:
o Possess a bachelor’s degree or higher, and meet the basic skills requirement. The most common options for meeting the basic skills requirements are:
1. Pass the CBEST
2. Qualify via Coursework (see below)
3. See CTC link for other alternatives for details regarding Basic Skills:

There are many options outside of the CBEST exam, so please review this page carefully.
New guest teachers will be required to attend an orientation.
• Pass a Criminal Background Check - Fingerprint fees are temporarily waived.
• Obtain a clear TB test
Please click here to view the Guest Teacher Salary Information If you are qualifying via coursework to meet the basic skills requirement, you will need to attach transcripts and the following completed worksheet that will assist you in completing the 41-BSR : Please click here for the form The transcripts must show passage of courses in reading, writing, and mathematics. Courses must have been taken at a regionally-accredited college or university for credit, passed with a grade of "B-" or better and be at least 3 semester units (or equivalent quarter units). It is possible to identify two courses for a single area to meet the minimum unit requirement. Qualifying coursework does not include professional development or continuing education units or in-service training or workshops. Reminder, The following documents must be uploaded with your application: Credential/Permit Copy OR Copy of CBEST and Transcripts OR Copy of College/University Transcript - Highlighting courses used on the worksheet and a copy of the worksheet (use "other" as the attachment type) and save completed worksheet with your name/BSR (example: john.sanjuan/BSR)
