JOB DESCRIPTION: DIRECTOR OF SPECIAL EDUCATION
DISTINGUSHING CHARACTERISTICS
Plans programs for individuals with exceptional needs and provides instructional leadership to the programs. Consults with and serves as a resource to certificated staff. Serves as a liaison and consultant to other professions, agencies, and the community. Position requires travel for conferences, workshops, committee meetings and site visitations. Performs other administrative duties as assigned.
This is a sedentary position classification and performs light work that involves sitting a portion of the time, but does require walking and standing for extended periods. This position requires accurate perceiving of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, working with educational materials and objects, and providing oral information and direction.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
•Assists in the planning and implementation of Individualized Educational Plans (IEP).
•Observes instructional programs and serves as a resource person to teachers.
•Serves as the District’s administrator at IEP meetings when appropriate.
•Represents the district with the SELPA and other outside agencies.
•Coordinates the resolution of compliance, due process complaints, Fair Hearings, etc.
•Assist teachers in preparation and development of instructional materials and curriculum development for students with special needs.
•Supervises student assessment including practices, methods, instruments, reports, recommendations.
•Provides instructional leadership and professional development for Special Education staff members.
•Designs program evaluations.
•Prepares and manages the Special Education budget.
•Assists in the development of parent programs.
•Assists in the recruitment and selection of certificated staff.
•Provides Program management.
•Seeks and writes grants for the District as well as Special Education.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
•Federal and state laws and regulations pertaining to education for students with exceptional needs.
•Thorough understanding of IDEA.
•Appropriate handling of confidential files.
•Special Education program management.
Ability to:
•Communicate effectively with principals, teachers, parents and students.

Experience in:
•Evaluating children of diverse developmental levels and categorical designations;
•Developing Individual Education Plans;
•Conducting professional development activities.
•Grant writing.
Education/Certification
•Three (3) years of experience in special education.
•Administrative Service Credential required.
Under the direction of the Superintendent or designee.

Master's Degree Stipend - $1,500.00 Doctorate's Degree Stipend - $1,500.00 EXPERIENCE: *Evaluating Children of diverse developmental levels and categorical designations; *Developing Individual Education Plans; *Conducting professional development activities.
