Summary Description:
San Bernardino Valley College invites applications for a full-time tenure track position as a Learning Disabilities Specialist housed in the department of Student Accessibility Services (SAS). Under the direction of the Director of Student Accessibility Services, the Learning Disabilities Specialist has the following responsibilities and performs the following duties in support of SAS at the college:
• Pre-screen, administer, score, and interpret mandate assessment battery for determining eligibility of students with prospective learning disabilities.• Prepare, interpret, and analyze information from assessments, and other information from medical, psychological and educational documentation to determine eligibility and to develop and implement accommodations and services.• Identify educational limitations and designate appropriate accommodations designed to help students with learning disabilities to achieve academic success.• Prepare, monitor, and update student Education Plans to ensure students with learning disabilities are receiving appropriate accommodations and services and are successfully progressing towards their academic goals.• Act as liaison between campus faculty and staff regarding equity issues affecting students with learning disabilities.• Provide training and counseling to campus wide faculty and staff concerning laws and regulations regarding students with disabilities, confidentiality issues, and strategies for assisting and referring students with disabilities to appropriate campus services.• Develop, monitor, and modify (as needed) student education plans for students pursuing certificate, Associate Degree, and/or transfer programs.• Maintain liaison with educational and community-based organizations through ongoing outreach efforts and events.• Teach basic skills courses (math, writing, study skills) designed for students with learning disabilities and students who would benefit from acquiring learning strategies to facilitate and improve their academic performance.• Collaborate with the staff and faculty of SAS and the SAS High Tech Center.EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:• Provide a wide variety of assessments to students with a suspected learning disability.• Participate in department, division and campus meetings and activities.• Develop and monitor student education plans.• Use information provided by students during intake process to determine appropriate accommodations.• Participate in regular professional development activity.
QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:
• Master's degree in learning disabilities, special education, education, psychology, speech language pathology, communication disorders, educational or school psychology, counseling, or rehabilitation counseling. AND• Fifteen (15) semester units of upper division or graduate study in the area of learning disabilities, to include, adult cognitive and achievement assessment or the equivalent.3. Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.*Applicants who do not meet the minimum requirements outlined in the posting and wish to be considered must submit an Equivalency Request and attach it with the application material.
Desired Qualifications:• Deep knowledge of learning disabilities and the impact on learning in the classroom.• Knowledge of various assessment practices• Knowledge of various mental health, physical, and learning disabilities.• The ability to provide rehabilitative counseling and support to a wide age range of students at the community college level.• Bilingual desired but not required.
