SAN GABRIEL UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT TITLE: District School Nurse QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Licensed Registered Nurse 2. Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing 3. Possession of a School Audiometrist Certificate-as required by the State of California 4. First Aid/CPR AED Instructor Certificate 5. Fluent in a second language preferable REPORTS TO: Director II, Special Education JOB GOAL: To provide the fullest possible educational opportunity for each district student by minimizing absence due to illness and creating a climate of health and well being in the district schools. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Conducts mandated school health screening services including hearing, vision and scoliosis screening. 2. Assumes an active role in substance abuse prevention education. 3. Communicate with parents, school personnel, physicians and other health providers on school health related issues. 4. Maintains up-to-date cumulative health records on all students. 5. Assumes authority, in the absence of a physician, for the care of a student or staff member who has suffered injury or emergency illness. 6. Will make home visits when appropriate. 7. Participates with school staff in developing and implementing total school health program. 8. Provide recommendations regarding modification of the educational program of individual students with specific health needs. 9. Prepares and submits monthly reports to the District Health Coordinator. 10. Authorizes exclusion and readmission of students in compliance with Board policy on infectious and contagious diseases. 11. Make recommendations to teachers on issues regarding student health conditions. 12. Promotes a healthy and safe school environment. 13. Is knowledgeable in first aid and safety control methods. 14. Provides First Aid and CPR AED training to staff. 15. Is knowledgeable in State, County, City health laws and regulations. 16. Works closely with the school health aides. 17. Adheres to the Code of Ethics of the Nurse Practice Act. This list of essential functions and responsibilities is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary.
