Job Description

The Library Tech III - Technical Services position will focus on Acquisitions and Cataloging for the library. They will work closely with the Collections Development and Cataloging librarians and use basic bookkeeping and budgeting techniques to purchase materials for the library collection, generate purchase orders in Workday, track library funds in various accounts, and perform a variety of cataloging functions such as copy cataloging, adding portfolios, and withdrawing items in the Library Management System. In addition, they will monitor the level of library supplies, and will serve regularly scheduled hours supervising hourly workers at a Public Services Desk. Along with another Library Technician, this position will be responsible for opening the library. 

SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the assigned supervisor, perform a variety of highly complex and specialized technical paraprofessional duties related to public service, circulation, acquisitions, and cataloging resources in a community college library.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Fully utilize various library related interfaces to provide access to library resources, including but not limited to the circulation, cataloging, acquisition, and report modules of the integrated library system.
  • Using the appropriate module in the integrated library system and/or finance system, coordinate the acquisition, cataloging, and circulation of resources and equipment in the library.
  • Conduct catalog maintenance in accordance with library rules and standards.
  • Coordinate operations of assigned area(s).
  • Following standardized library cataloging rules and local cataloging standards acquire and edit permanent catalog records to facilitate identification, access and use of resources. In conjunction with a librarian, create permanent catalog records. Using judgment, interpret and apply appropriate tools and standards necessary for cataloging and classification of library resources.
  • Recruit, interview, train, provide work direction, and evaluate hourly employees (non-classified); prepare employment forms, monitor hours and schedules to ensure coverage of library service desks.
  • Record, tabulate and compile statistics; create, generate, and maintain a variety of detailed statistical records and reports for assigned area(s) of responsibility.
  • Communicate with district personnel, students, other colleges and libraries, vendors, and community members regarding library services, policies, events and resolve issues.
  • Open and close the library as assigned according to established procedures including preparing equipment, securing the library, and locking/unlocking the doors.
  • Maintain assigned area(s) in a safe, clean and orderly condition; assure compliance with established safety procedures and regulations.

    SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:
  • Keep current documentation of all processes within assigned area(s).
  • Coordinate inventory implementation and completion, including creating necessary reports.
  • Maintain current qualifications for area(s) of assignment.
  • Monitor, track and analyze assigned budget and provide input to supervisor and/or librarians.
  • Work with integrated library system and various vendors to create processes for record integration.
  • Provide information and assistance to users in accessing library resources and using equipment within the library.
  • Work with assigned supervisor and/or librarians to analyze statistics and identify trends for the continuous improvement of services.
  • Perform related duties as assigned. Library Tech III should be able to perform Library Technician I and Library Technician II duties in addition to other duties as assigned.

  • Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) bibliographic database or any bibliographic utility in current use.
  • Standardized library cataloging rules and local cataloging standards, such as RDA and AACR2.

  • Word processing, spreadsheets, database, and other standard software to create documents, reports, and materials.
  • Principles and practices of budget preparation and control.
  • Modern office practices, procedures and equipment.
  • Recordkeeping techniques.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
  • Principles and practices of training and providing work direction.
  • Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
  • Operation of a personal computer.
  • Data entry and retrieval.
  • District organization, operation, policy and objectives.
  • Technical aspects of field of specialty.

    ABILITY TO:
  • Perform complex and technical paraprofessional duties in a community college library.
  • Coordinate operations for an assigned area of responsibility.
  • Perform difficult bibliographic searches and resolve cataloging problems.
  • Participate in the development of library policies, procedures and programs.
  • Operate standard office machines and specialized library equipment.
  • Oversee and participate in the receipt, acquisition, cataloging, distribution, circulation, and utilization of library resources as assigned.
  • Monitor budget for assigned area.
  • Utilize various software packages to enter and retrieve complex data in an efficient and effective manner consistent with requirements of the position.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to: a Library Technician Certificate or Associates Degree AND two years of increasingly responsible experience at the level of a Library Technician II OR five years of increasingly responsible experience at the level of a Library Technician I.

    WORKING CONDITIONS: College library environment. Must be able to lift, bend, stoop, and push.
