ACCOUNT CLERK III 


DEFINITION


Performs responsible and complex financial clerical work involved in the preparation and maintenance of financial and statistical records with independent responsibility for an assigned function.


DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS


An Account Clerk III assumes functional responsibility for an accounting clerical activity such as, student body accounting, special education accounting, payroll, general accounting, or accounts payable. The work of this class requires the frequent use of independent judgment in making decisions within established accounting systems and procedures and may involve the indirect supervision of lower level accounting clerical staff.


An Accounting Technician assumes direct supervisory responsibility for a major accounting clerical function such as payroll, accounts payable, or general accounting, and performs the most complex financial record keeping work related to the District budget, state, and federal programs.


An Account Clerk II performs a wide variety of journey level accounting clerical duties requiring the application of accounting systems and procedures. Positions in this class are normally only assigned to the central accounting office where the accounting clerical work prepared by other offices in the District is audited, processed, and reviewed.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED


General supervision is provided by higher-level financial or administrative positions.


Assignments may require the indirect supervision of other accounting clerical positions.


EXAMPLES OF DUTIES


Performs a variety of complex clerical financial work in:


The preparation, maintenance and auditing of financial records.


Arranging, posting, and balancing financial data.


Preparing, computing, and processing payroll records.


Calculating profit and loss statements, reconciling bank statements, and maintaining journals.


The collection and disbursement of student body funds.


Financial record keeping relating to the purchase and sale of student store merchandise and the sale of student body cards, athletic insurance, tickets for school events and yearbooks; displaying and selling merchandise.


Sorting and counting money, making bank deposits, and writing checks.


Prepares expenditure reports for federal and state grant programs.


Reconciles insurance billing and employee eligibility for the District’s health and welfare plans.


Assisting supervisor in planning and implementing special projects. 


Performs related duties as assigned.


CLASS QUALIFICATIONS


Knowledge of:


Methods, practices, and terminology used in bookkeeping and financial record keeping.


Appropriate laws, rules, and regulations relating to assigned functions.


Methods and practices used in financial and statistical clerical work.


Ability to:


Perform responsible financial clerical work requiring use of independent judgment and initiative.


Read, interpret, and explain laws, rules, and regulations.


Prepare accurate financial and statistical reports and maintain records.


Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.


Perform arithmetical calculations with speed and accuracy.


Operate a variety of office equipment including a personal computer, ten-key calculator, fax and copy machine.


Provide technical or functional supervision to other clerical personnel.


Be resourceful and find solutions to resolve issues in the absence of the supervisor.


Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers and the public.
