Job Summary
The Occupational Therapist implements occupational therapy services. Related work includes assessments, treatment planning, providing direct therapy, and consultation to teachers, staff and families as well as supervision of OT aide/s and fieldwork students. Responsibilities include assistance with interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; and providing input during performance appraisals. Responsible for evaluating and formulating a treatment plan for assigned children. Evaluates child’s development skill level, if possible, within three (3) months of first treatment session. Makes appropriate activity list for child within one (1) month of first treatment session.

- Provides sensory, motor, and/or purposeful play activities to all children receiving direct occupational therapy (OT) services. Makes appropriate activity choices based upon accurate activity analysis. Provides sensory stimulation in accordance with the child’s needs.
- Functions as an occupational therapy team member. Participates in on-going training of Level I and Level II OT interns. Participates in problem-solving regarding children’s needs and performance. Provides feedback to Assist Coordinator on aide level performance.
- Functions as interdisciplinary team member. Meets with other professionals (psychologist, teachers, and communication specialist) as needed to develop individualized educational and behavioral programming. Re-evaluates and reports progress annually. Develops appropriate Individualized Education Plan (I.E.P.) goals and objectives for each child that requires direct services. Consults on an as needed basis to support staff regarding tasks and learning objectives that can be enhanced by the occupational therapist’s knowledge. Acts as a consultant to education staff regarding activities of daily living, oral motor skills, and mealtime performance of assigned children.
- Provides thorough evaluations on assigned children. Evaluates overall sensory processing; to include vestibular, visual, auditory, olfactory, tactile and kinesthetic areas. Evaluates overall muscular development, range of motion and reflex integration. Evaluates perceptual motor difficulties. Evaluates oral motor abilities, when appropriate.
- Communications with parents of assigned children. Attempts in writing or by telephone, to contact parents one (1) week prior to annual I.E.P. meeting to collaborate on goal development.
- Responsible for direct care staff working with children in the OT clinic. Intervenes with aides who are not complying with appropriate activity directions, and then immediately re-directs and/or demonstrates appropriate techniques. Intervenes with all level of staff that is not observing safety rules in the OT clinic, and then re-directs them to safer procedures.
