TRANSLATOR/INTERPRETER
DEFINITION:
Provides simultaneous and consecutive oral translation/interpretation between English and the designated foreign language during a variety of District and school meetings, legal proceedings, hearings, and home visits to assist District personnel, outside agency representatives, students and parents. Translates complex and general written materials between English and the designated foreign language.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
A Translator/Interpreter provides simultaneous and consecutive bilingual oral translation/interpretation during legal proceedings (e.g. IEP, SST, IILP), expulsion/ suspension hearings (Pre-SARB/SARB); school/community/District meetings; and home visits, for District personnel (administrators, counselors, psychologists, nurses, teachers), outside agency representatives (e.g. attorneys, law enforcement personnel, social services representatives), parents, and students. In addition, a Translator/ Interpreter translates complex technical, legal, and medical documents (e.g. expulsion reports, IEP/Special Ed. assessments, psychologist's reports, Board Policy) as well as general materials (e.g., handbooks, manuals, forms, memos, correspondence).
A Community Liaison - Bilingual establishes and maintains an effective liaison between the school and student's home providing responsible assistance to parents. Provides bilingual oral and written translation of general information as necessary.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
General supervision is provided by the assigned supervisor.
No supervision is exercised over District personnel.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Provides simultaneous and consecutive bilingual oral translation/interpretation at school, community, home visits, and District meetings such as Individualized Education Program conferences, Student Study Teams, expulsion/suspension hearings.
Translates complex technical, legal, and medical documents including expulsion reports, IEP/Special Ed. assessments, psychologist's reports, and Board Policy, as well as general materials such as handbooks, manuals, forms, memos, correspondence. Prepares written translations of District meetings and conferences.
Reviews and proofreads as necessary written translations submitted by District personnel and edits for accuracy of meaning, grammar, syntax, and idiomatic and cultural appropriateness.
Administers English and designated foreign language proficiency tests to students at District offices or school sites. Generates and maintains related forms and reports.
Arranges for transportation of parents and students to District meetings.
Answers phone calls in the designated foreign language as necessary.
Operates translation headphone equipment (Silent Translator) to facilitate simultaneous interpretations at District meetings.
Utilizes a computerized bilingual word processing program for written translations and subsequent file retention.
Performs related general clerical duties including, but not limited to, maintaining necessary files and typing of translated materials.
Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
CLASS QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:
Grammar, spelling, punctuation, syntax, and idiomatic usage of both the English language and the designated foreign language.
Computers and standard office equipment, Microsoft Word and other standard software.
English and the designated foreign language equivalent of general, technical, and subject matter terms.
Ability to:
Compose, edit, and translate materials in English and the designated foreign language and to provide simultaneous and/or consecutive oral translation or interpretation during group meetings and in one-to-one situations.
Listen to English and speak in the designated language simultaneously.
Translate accurately.
Use a computer and related software to compose and type a variety of materials.
Work without technical supervision and take responsibility for accuracy of translation.
Translate materials within specified time limits.
Speak in public meetings.
Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with District personnel, students, parents, and outside agency personnel.
Be insured at standard vehicle liability and property damage insurance rates and maintain insurability.

One year of experience in composing, editing, and translating materials in English and the designated foreign language and providing consecutive or simultaneous oral translation or interpretations during group meetings and in one-to-one situations.
Computer skills, including adequate proficiency in using Microsoft Word and other standard software, for bilingual translation.
Desirable: Written and oral proficiency in an additional language.
License or Certificate:
Possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license and the use of personal transportation. Also, ability to be insured at standard vehicle liability and property damage insurance rates, and maintain insurability.
Any other combination of education, training and experience that could likely provide the desired skills, knowledge or abilities may be considered.

Environment:
Regularly works in an office environment; occasionally outside; will be required to use a personal vehicle in the course of duties; will be required to attend evening meetings and some travel; and may be required to work overtime. Work environment is generally clean and the noise level is usually moderate.
Physical Demands:
Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer and other office equipment; sitting or standing for extended periods of time; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, or crouch to file; seeing to view a computer monitor and read a variety of materials; and hearing and speaking to exchange information in person and on the phone. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations, some outdoor activity and exposure to outside weather conditions.
