Banning Unified School District SPECIAL EDUCATION INSTRUCTIONAL AIDE I Definition: Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, or the Director of Student Services, assist a certificated teacher or specialist in providing instruction to individual or small groups of physically handicapped, developmentally disabled students or speech impaired students in a special education learning environment; monitor and report student progress regarding behavior and performance; perform a variety of clerical duties assigned. Example of Duties: Reinforce instruction of individual or small groups of developmentally disabled, physically handicapped or speech impaired students as directed by the teacher. • Assist in preparation of materials for classroom use for students; administer and correct tests and record scores on student profiles and other records as requested; taking roll and maintaining records and files. • Provide assistance to physically handicapped students with learning activities, personal hygiene, toileting and lifting if necessary, and getting on and off the bus; reinforce self-help and daily living skills. • Provide assistance in behavior control of students according to approved procedures. • Assist the certificated special education instruction in supervising students inside and outside the classroom as assigned. • Provide support to teacher by setting up work areas, displays and exhibits, operating various educational equipment as needed; distribute and collect papers and supplies. • Assist students by providing proper examples, emotional support, friendly attitude and general guidance. • Assure the health and safety of students by following all health and safety rules. • Direct group activities of students as assigned. • Participate in meetings and in-service training programs as assigned. • Assist certificated teacher in compliance with the student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP), as assigned. • Perform related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications: Knowledge of: Needs, problems and concerns of special education students. Health and safety regulations for special education students. Child guidance principals and practices. Safe practices in classroom and outdoor activities. Basic subjects taught in the District schools, including arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language and reading. Correct English usage, including reading, writing and communication skills. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy. Record-keeping techniques. Classroom procedure and conduct. ? Ability to: Demonstrate an understanding, patient and receptive attitude toward children with special needs. Perform duties such as filing duplicating and maintaining records related to the instructional program. Understand and follow oral and written directions. Communicate effectively with children and adults, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Supervise student according to approved policies and procedures as directed. Operate a variety of instructional equipment, including copiers, audio-visual equipment, laminator and scantron machines. Assist with the implementation of goals set forth in a student’s individualized Education Plan (IEP) within the special education learning environment. Work confidentially with discretion. Complete work independently with little direction. Read, interpret and apply rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Work effectively in a multi-cultural environment. Required to speak, read, and write fluently in English Experience: Six month’s experience as an instructional Aide; or any combination of experience and education involving work with children and utilizing the knowledge and abilities required of the class equal to six months. EDUCATION ? Graduation from high school and two years of college. ? Must meet requirements of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB). Meet the rigorous standard of quality through a formal state or local assessment, or two years of study at an institution of higher education, or associates degree. Pass the required District Exam. ? Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk and sit. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read typewritten material. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. All paraprofessionals employed by the district prior to January 8, 2002, shall be considered to have met the requirements of the above.
