DEFINITION:
The Paraeducator, Community Liaison, under the direction of the site administrator, provides classroom support and serves as a liaison between parents, students and the community; provides information regarding school or District programs, procedures, activities, rules and regulations; monitors and assists with various attendance procedures; provides translation or interpretation services for limited and non-English speaking parents.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
• Provides classroom support to fulfill student needs.
• Serves as a liaison between the school and school community to assist in fostering a climate of understanding and cooperation; communicates with site administrators to meet needs and monitor attendance of school programs.
• Meets with students and parents regarding student attendance problems; informs,advises or directs students and parents on solving attendance related problems; refers families and students to community resources and school administrators when necessary; makes home visits as required.
• Interprets educational programs of the school; communicates with parents regarding various pupil problems, attendance and parental responsibilities in assisting children to obtain success in school; encourage parents to attend and participate in school and parent activities.
• Provides assistance to families of identified students; participates in the identification of needy students or families; assists parents with applications for services and transportation; makes referrals to community agencies as appropriate.
• Plans and assists in parent orientation and parent education activities related to specific consolidated programs; conducts parenting classes as assigned.
• Translates and interprets materials including school and District policies, programs and activities for parents, school personnel, students and others as requested; translates during parent conferences and other meetings.
• Operates various standard office equipment as assigned.
• Assists with other activities including health, attendance, yard duty and clerical activities as needed; contacts parents regarding illnesses or absences as needed.
• Performs related tasks as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:
• Basic instructional methods and techniques.
• Requirements of maintaining a classroom or other learning environment in a safe, clean and orderly condition.
• Community interest, concerns and attitudes relative to educational programs of the District.
• Procedures, methods, techniques and strategies utilized in dealing with sensitive school and community problems, issues and concerns.
• Correct oral and written usage of English and a designated second language.
• Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy and understanding of cultural diversity.
• Oral and written communication skills.
• Record-keeping techniques.
• Health regulations and safe working methods and procedures.
• Proper lifting techniques.
• District policies, rules and regulations.
Ability to:
• Assist teacher with instruction and related activities in a classroom or assigned learning environment.
• Monitor, observe and report student behavior and progress according to approved policies and procedures.
• Serve as a liaison between parents, students and the community.
• Provide information regarding school or District programs, procedures, activities,rules and regulations.
• Provide translations or interpretation services for limited and non-English speaking parents.

Education/Training/Required Certification:
• High school graduate or equivalent.
• One year experience in community services programs or related areas.
• Valid California driver’s license
• Required to speak, read and write in a designated second language.
