I. Position Title:
District Translator
Position Definition:
Under general supervision, to prepare written translations of correspondence, educational and general materials from English to Spanish; to provide oral interpretation for District staff; to perform typing, record keeping, filing and general office clerical work, and to do related work as may be required.
Responsibilities:
Translate correspondence, minutes, notices, bulletins, press releases, educational material and forms into written format using appropriate expressions, comprehensibility, grammar and syntax. Review translated materials submitted by other personnel and edit for accuracy. Serve as a technical resource person for the District, providing oral translation as needed explaining words and phrases for meaning and appropriateness. Provide translator/interpreter services as needed to other District personnel as assigned by the administrator; act as interpreter for foreign language speaking parents and children in the course of District Office operation. Type, proofread and correct materials written in a foreign language; prepare materials for reprographics. Answer, screen and rote telephone calls, type bulletins and memoranda including materials of a confidential nature; independently compose letters on routine matters. Attend group meetings as appropriate. Perform variety of clerical functions including typing, filing, shorthand dictation, documentation, recordkeeping, and receptionist duties. Perform related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: Interpreting and translating techniques; structure of English and Spanish languages including pronunciation, spelling, grammar, punctuation, vocabulary and comprehension; regional differences in word usage and idioms; modern office practices, procedures, methods and equipment.
Ability to: Speak, read and write effectively in English and Spanish; produce written material in appropriate, grammatically correct Spanish; edit articles for publication; understand and carry out oral and written directions; paraphrase and condense without changing the meaning of original material; understand and participate in conversations in Spanish with a high degree of precision of vocabulary and fluency.
Skills:
Keyboard at a rate of not less than 55 words per minute (in English) from clear, legible copy. Dictation skills (shorthand, speed writing, or other methods) at advanced level desirable.
Education, Experience, and Licenses:
Education:Graduation from High School or equivalent, INCLUDING OR SUPPLEMENTED BY college courses in Spanish and courses/training/seminars in office practices
PROOF OF EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS MUST ACCOMPANY APPLICATION
Experience: Two (2) years increasingly responsible clerical experience, including composing, editing and/or translating materials in English and Spanish.
License Requirements: Must posses a valid California Driver’s License and have an acceptable driving record to qualify for insurability with the District’s insurance carrier.

Certificate of Keyboarding/Typing of 55 Net WPM or more (5 minute test), signed and dated within 12 months of this posting by test proctor.
Certificate of Keyboarding/Typing of 55 Net WPM or more must include the following: a) Name of organization administering the exam b) Your first and last name c) Date exam was taken (must be within the last 12 months) d) Certificate must be signed by proctor of the exam *ONLINE KEYBOARDING/TYPING TESTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED* Copies of documents submitted must be legible. Applicants who fail to submit all required information and documents will not be considered for employment. Experience: Two (2) years of increasingly responsible clerical experience in composing, editing and/or translating materials in English and the required non-English language. *Prior to employment, all applicants are subject to a fingerprint clearance through the Department of Justice (DOJ) and a fee for processing. Authorization of employment will not be granted until the fingerprint clearance from DOJ has been accepted.
