ABOUT THE JOB: The current vacancies are two part-time (3.5 hour), school session positions at a high school and one full-time (8 hour), 10.5-month position in the Office of Student Services. Under general supervision, using moderate level skills and judg­ment, performs community outreach services in relation to students and families of students with welfare and school attendance problems.

JOB DUTIES: Assists school personnel with students having attendance problems by making home calls regarding truancy and poor attendance, to verify addresses, residency permits, and inter- and intra-district transfers; checks referrals on children not enrolled in school, child abuse problems, and welfare needs; prepares reports on results of home contacts, follows up, and sets up case files; refers students and parents to appropriate community agencies to help resolve problems; assists in setting up conferences between the school and family; informs parents and legal guardians of attendance requirements and district policies and regulations; may transport students or parents under special circumstances; assists families in com­pleting district forms or forms for welfare assistance; may provide information on health services, special education, or district services; performs other duties as needed.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education and Experience: Graduation from high school or equivalent, and two years of college courses with emphasis in human services, behavioral sciences or related subjects; and one year of experience equivalent to full-time work with a human services agency working with families and youth. Part-time experience will be considered and adjusted appropriately. Any other combination of training and experience which would likely provide the required skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.

SPECIAL NOTE: These positions require fluency in speaking, reading, and writing in both English and Spanish. 

LICENSE: Must possess and maintain a valid Class C California Driver License and remain insurable at the standard insurance rate. Candidates must submit a recent (within the last 30 days) original DMV driving record by the oral rating exam.

A SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE REQUIRES THE FOLLOWING….

Knowledge of: Resources and services available in the district and the local community; computer programs and software which may include specialized language word processing software programs; telephone and office etiquette and procedures; school programs and policies, and community resources; cultural nuances of designated languages as needed; vocabulary related to school district environment.

Ability to: Communicate effectively in the English Language and the language of the community, both in oral and written form; understand and interpret district policies and regulations; develop and maintain effective work­ing relationships with district personnel, students, parents, and community resource people; reassure parents and encourage them to participate in school and district activities; learn about community services available and explain them to parents, teachers, administrators and representatives of various community groups and agencies; work cooperatively with district staff, schools, and representatives of various community groups and agencies; work inde­pendently within the scope of departmental and district policies and regulations; operate computers and other standard office equipment and software effectively; develop and maintain accurate records.
