The Position:

Under the direction of the Dean of Student Affairs, the Mental Health Counselor is responsible for providing outreach and programming including seminars, groups, curriculum, and case conferences (professional development, trainings, workshops) with an emphasis on the following areas of culturally competent clinical and college student populations:

• Latinx communities

• BIPOC communities including queer and trans communities of color

• DACAmented/Undocumented communities

• Cultural/Race-Based Collective Trauma

• Opportunity Youth

• Veterans

• Unhoused persons

• Transition Aged Foster Youth

• Justice Impacted

Major Responsibilities:

The Mental Health Counselor will be instrumental in bridging the gap between students’ physical and mental health needs, while increasing direct access to county and community resources. The ongoing mistrust of the mental health care system in communities of color and marginalized populations needs to be intentionally addressed to decrease stigma and increase help seeking behaviors and access to care as the campus returns to in person and fully operational status.This position works under the guidance and reports to the Dean of Student Affairs within the BE Well CE program.

Qualifications:

(a) Master’s degree, or equivalent foreign degree, in the discipline of the faculty member’s assignment. (b) Master’s degree, or equivalent foreign degree, in a discipline reasonably related to the faculty member’s assignment and possession of a bachelor’s degree, or equivalent foreign degree, in the discipline of the faculty member’s assignment.

Desired Qualifications:

• Masters or Doctoral degree in Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, Professional Clinical Counselor or Clinical Psychology from an accredited institution or equivalent

• Licensed or license eligible (within one year) in the State of California as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, LPCC or Psychologist

• Minimum of three years as a counselor in an educational setting or institutional setting with counseling experience (including short and long term treatment planning, crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and management of disruptive behavior) working with people of great diversity in socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background, gender identities, ages, sexual orientations, and other diverse qualities including those with different levels of academic preparation and varying physical and learning abilities

• Experience addressing systemic barriers and access to healthcare/stigma reduction efforts via Outreach/Social Media/Peer Educator related programs and activities (workshops, trainings, professional development) with emphasis on Latinx, BIPOC, LGBTQIA+ and Veteran populations and collective trauma

• Demonstrated knowledge of problems encountered by low income, culturally diverse and first-time college students and active engagement of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) principles

• Skills and experience collaborating, consulting, and training with colleagues, faculty, and various staff within a supportive counseling, medical or higher education setting demonstrating effective collegial collaboration and leadership skills (with a particular emphasis on instructional collaborations)

• Evidence of knowledge and experience with state and federal guidelines of the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as they relate to persons with psychological disabilities

• Experience engaging key community partners to participate in training and outreach with key players, as well as provision of services to campus community

• Outstanding oral and written communication skills

Licenses:

• California License Preferred (LCSW, LMFT, LPCC, PsyD)

• License eligible (associate’s license) via VA BBS in one of the above disciplines within one year is required

Pay Information:

Class 1, Step A – Class 6, Step C ($6,032.90 – $8,128.98) per month based on the current AFT – College Faculty Tenured-Tenure Track Monthly Salary Schedule.

Initial salary placement for this Assistant Professor is commensurate with required education and related teaching experience as outlined in section A2.1 of the AFT Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and it is non-negotiable. The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid medical, dental, vision plans, sick leave, and opportunities for professional development. This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime. Benefits will be provided under the terms of the AFT-Guild, Local 1931 – Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. Annual Salaries will be recalculated for service less than a full academic year based on Education Code §87815, any required adjustment will be made within the first pay period. Travel reimbursement for interviewees traveling more than 200 miles, one-way, may be paid according to geographic location (see SDCCD Travel Stipend Policy, Rev 7/14/2011). Typically, Assistant Professors earn tenure after 4 years and promote to Associate Professor.
