BASIC JOB DESCRIPTION: 

Under general direction of the Site Administrator, the Library Clerk performs a variety of clerical and school library activities.  Primary tasks/responsibilities include maintaining and promoting the library/media collection.  Provides clerical functions as required and performs other duties directly related to this job description.  Shall adhere to all applicable laws, rules and regulations of the state, county and school district governing board and shall be familiar with and comply with all collective bargaining contracts pertinent to this position.

 

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs general clerical duties.
  • Insures that all incoming library materials have been marked properly.
  • Shelves and/or oversees student assistants in shelving materials.
  • Assists students and teachers in locating materials.
  • Checks materials in and out to students or oversees student assistant in this operation.
  • Mends and repairs library materials.
  • Prepares bulletin boards and displays.
  • Processes reserve materials.
  • Collects fines for overdue and lost materials.
  • Types bibliographies, book and order information, and correspondence.
  • Trains and directs the work of student assistants in the circulation and shelving of materials.
  • Maintains order and discipline among students using the library.
  • Reads appropriate materials to student groups.
  • Inventories all library materials and books.
  • Prepares and maintains records and reports as required
  • Maintains confidentiality concerning staff, students and their families.
  • Maintains an acceptable attendance record.
  • Maintains a clean, orderly work station.
  • Willingness to update skills and knowledge commensurate with the demands of this position.
  • Shall perform other job related duties as assigned on an equitable basis.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • Ability to see and read, with or without vision aids; ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels; ability to communicate so others will clearly understand normal conversation.
  • Ability to provide prompt attention to students, staff, and parents with a friendly and welcoming demeanor.
  • Knowledge of correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
  • Knowledge of interest/ability levels of student readers; appropriate materials and activities.
  • Knowledge of basic library methods, practices, and terminology.
  • Ability to learn the Dewey decimal classification system, the electronic catalog system, and the basic library reference materials.
  • Ability to maintain discipline and order among students using the library.
  • Ability to read aloud in an interesting manner from prepared materials.
  • Ability to develop and/or maintain a functional library/media collection.
  • Ability to operate a variety of office machines including electric typewriter, copier, duplicating machine, word processor and computer terminal and printer as required.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, parents, and teachers.
  • Ability to pass a standardized typing test at 35 net words per minute.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to pass the District job related test.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Manual dexterity and physical condition necessary to maintain a rigorous work schedule.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate standard library equipment including typewriter and a variety of audio visual equipment; bending, reaching, lifting to shelve books (25-40 pounds) and materials; speaking to exchange information; sitting and operating a keyboard to enter data in a computer terminal.
  • Light to moderate stress level.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

  • Indoor library school environment.
  • Temperature – normal climate.

 

CONTACTS

  • Daily contact with students, teachers, all school and District staff.
  • Occasional contact with parents, community members and outside agency personnel.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

  • Bilingual skills (Spanish).
  • Two year’s experience in clerical work involving some computer skills.
  • One semester in library science or one year of library experience.

 

CERTIFICATES/LICENSES

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid California driver’s license.
