Job Purpose Statement/s
Under the direction of the designated supervisor, the Instructional Assistant III-STEP will perform a variety of follow-up instructional activities; assist in the conduct of training and learning activities with children experiencing special learning needs; work with students who exhibit behavioral challenges; perform a variety of routine clerical and supportive activities for instructional personnel; and do other related work as required.
Essential Job Functions:
- Assist students enrolled in a specialized program which focuses on addressing maladaptive behavioral concerns.
- Provide academic and behavioral modification support to students in a specialized setting specifically designed for a population of students struggling with emotion based adaptive skills.
- Assist instructional personnel with presentation of learning materials and in the conduct of instructional exercises.
- Tutor individual students and small groups of students with special learning needs to reinforce and follow up learning and training activities.
- Monitor and assist students with special learning needs in drill, practice and study activities as follow-up to presentation of instructional lessons by instructional personnel.
- Direct students into safe learning activities and functions and assist in shaping of appropriate social behaviors.
- May assist with yard duty during recess/nutrition.
- May ride school bus with students.
- Assist in management of student behavior through use of positive reinforcement strategies and techniques.
- Assist in preparation of a variety of instructional materials and learning aids.
- Maintain a variety of records and files, including confidential student records and information.
- Operate and assist students in operation of a variety of instructional media.
- Monitor and assist in remediation of specific learning problems.
- Administer medication in accordance with specific medical instruction.
- Perform routine first aid which may include aiding children experiencing seizures or respiratory problems.
- Request appropriate assistance for serious pupil injury or illness.
- Maintain or assist in maintaining an orderly, attractive and positive learning environment.
- May participate as directed in parent conferences.
- May assist children with special physical needs.
- Work cooperatively with others.
- May assist in the development of skills with children who experience communication disorders.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- Behavioral antecedents that impact behaviors manifested by students.
- Proper methods of behavior intervention.
- Various instructional techniques.
- Methods used to motivate student performance.
- Applicable sections of the California Education Code, Board Policies and related laws.
- Basic concepts of child growth and development.
- Behavioral characteristics of students with special learning needs.
- English usage, punctuation, spelling, grammar, and math.
- Routine recordkeeping and filing/retrieval procedures related to episodic behaviors.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
ABILITY TO:
- Demonstrate an understanding, patient and receptive attitude toward students of varied age groups, particularly those exhibiting needs of a specialized nature.
- Appropriately manage student behavior and guide student toward more stable social behaviors.
- Communicate effectively in oral and written form.
- Perform routine clerical tasks and operate machines and equipment.
- Learn to utilize a variety of appropriate instructional level materials and procedures in the enhancement of a training and educational environment.
- Understand and carry out oral and written directions.

Experience: • One year of paid or volunteer experience working with children of various age levels requiring a specialized learning environment Education: • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade • Training or coursework in child growth and development, special education, instructional technology, or a closely related field desirable

The East Whittier City School District provides educational opportunities (transitional kindergarten through eighth grade, including special education) for approximately 9,000 children. The District employs approximately 1,075 teachers, administrators and support staff. We have 13 schools which operate on a traditional school year schedule.
