BASIC FUNCTION: Under administrative direction, the Licensed Vocational Nurse provides health care services within meeting the individual health needs of students; perform required duties as outlined in the Individual Health Services Plan (IHSP) for the student(s), such as monitoring seizures, administering injections as appropriate, assisting with student's personal hygiene, and providing instructional assistance as stipulated; provide first aid and emergency health assistance to students; perform a variety of clerical work in updating and maintaining student health records; incorporating health care plans directed by credentialed school nurse and physicians; complying with the laws relating to students health, including parental and guardian consent; providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured students; providing health information and serving as a resource to teachers, staff, and administrators; and identifying health problems for referral for proper treatment. Related work as required. 

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: Administers basic nursing care and protocols which may include administering injections, gastrostomy tube feeding, oral suctioning, ostomy care, tracheostomy suctioning, blood sugar testing, operating specialized medical equipment, wound care, first aid, medication and specialized medical treatments (e.g. gavage feeding, diabetic care, catherization, etc.) for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured children and/or stipulated in the Individual Health Services Plan (IHSP). E 

Administers prescribed medications according to physician's instructions; dispenses medications based on established district procedures and maintains related records and documents. E

Assist students with physical care activities of daily living including toileting, changing diapers, lifting wheelchair, mobility, feeding, and transfers. E 

As stipulated by the IHSP, provide instructional assistance to individual student(s) during classroom activities, lunch, physical education periods, field trips, recess, assist in loading and unloading of students from buses as assigned and various other activities. E 

Contacts parents, paramedics, and professional medical personnel as required by the nature of the emergency or the IHSP. May apply splints and slings and stop bleeding in more serious emergencies. E

Assists with providing health instructions to students for the purpose of promoting a healthy lifestyle and/or acting as a resource to students, teachers, and other school personnel by supporting healthy and safe environment, hand washing, head lice screening and other health related matters as needed. E

Collaborates with school/District staff members which include and is not limited to, Nurse, Health Assistants, Special Education Health Assistants, Special Education Instructional Assistants, Instructional Assistants, parents, students, and/or public agencies for the purpose of promoting and/or securing student health services; providing information and complying with legal requirements. E

Implements health care plans for students with health problems as described in IEP's or other written plans of care for the purpose of meeting the needs of students with chronic health problems and/or accommodation requirements. E

Maintains student's confidential files and records (e.g. health care plans, nursing activities, etc.) for the purpose of providing information required by legal requirements and professional standards. E 

Maintains contact with parents/guardians for the purpose of advising them of changes in student health and/or recommending further medical and/or emotional intervention. E 

Monitors students with chronic illnesses for the purpose of assisting the child in achieving the highest possible functional level. E 

Participates in a variety of meetings, workshops and seminars, and interdisciplinary teams (e.g. health conferences with parents, staff and community resources, etc.) for the purpose of gathering, conveying and/or sharing information on students health needs, service delivery, and educational programs; and/or improving skills and knowledge. E 

Perform a variety of activities pertinent to training, disciplining, and tutoring in order to inculcate habits, including personal hygiene procedures, knowledge, and skills, in students and instructional staff. E 

Prepares documentation (e.g. student health history, current health status, district/county/state reports, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support, conveying information, and/or complying with mandated requirements and professional guidelines. Reports health and safety issues to assigned administrator and appropriate agencies (e.g. fights, suspected child or substance abuse, contagious diseases, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining students personal safety, a positive learning environment and complying with regulatory requirements and established guidelines. E 

Responds to emergency medical situations (e.g. severe falls, prescription reactions, bleeding, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring appropriate immediate medical attention and related follow-up action. E 

Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Education/Experience: High school graduation or equivalent and graduation from an accredited Licensed Vocational Nurses Training Program. Two years of experience as a Licenses Vocational Nurse in a health, hospital or clinic related position and clerical experience. Experience in a public school district is desirable. Knowledge/Abilities: Medical procedures such as monitoring seizures, administering injections; child guidance principles and practices, especially as they relate to students; behavior of emotionally-disturbed students; child Abuse reporting requirements and procedures; modern office procedures and equipment. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy; health problems of school children; first aid procedures and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques, including Automatic External Defibrillator (AED). Specific knowledge to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job to include providing health services in a school setting; state laws regarding sexually transmitted diseases; health standards and hazards; and stages of child development. Ability to learn appropriate health-related techniques in administering injections or other procedures outlined in the IHSP. Learn to monitor student(s) health status and health related issues, such as seizure disorder, diabetes disorder, and other medical conditions; compile and maintain accurate and complete student health records; perform a variety of clerical work; provide first aid and emergency assistance as needed; demonstrate a patient, understanding and receptive attitude toward children with an illness or injury; work with a wide diversity of individuals, work confidentially with discretion; communicate with others regarding a variety of health-related activities or concerns; understand and follow oral and written directions; understand and apply rules, regulations, policies and procedures; learn the procedures, functions and limitations of assigned duties.

Licenses/ Other: Valid California Licensed Vocational Nurse License. Valid First Aid, CPR, and AED Certification from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association. Valid Class C California Driver's License and access to reliable insured transportation to and between assigned school sites during the school day.
