DISTRICT NURSE
DEFINITION
Under general supervision, plans, organizes, directs, and accomplishes goals and objectives of the Health Services program.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Positions in this class are established to carry out the basic objectives of the district's health services program. Incumbents are responsible for the following: state mandated vision and hearing screening, scoliosis screening, Child Protective Service referrals, instruction and certification of staff in CPR/First Aid, all reports relative to the above tests, the maintenance of student health data records, and the maintenance of school health offices.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Assess and evaluate the health and developmental status of selected students through nursing diagnosis and the use of appropriate evaluative techniques; work cooperatively with other School Assessment Team members to assess health needs related to learning, and determine appropriate educational plan; complete health and developmental history and 3-year updates as needed; conduct (or arrange for) mandated vision and hearing screening; conduct mandated scoliosis screening (requires team approach); assess student population for compliance with immunization and CHDP laws; supervise proper administration of medication procedures; provide adequate care for ill and injured children; provide student and parent health counseling; develop specialized and standardized procedures as needed for special needs students; conduct staff inservice on select health topics and related issues, ie., abuse reporting, recognition of communicable disease and appropriate action; comply with law regarding suspected child abuse; serve as a resource to teachers for health instruction, provide health education resource materials for classroom teachers, and provide student instruction of selected health topics and issues; instruct CPR/MFA/ER preparedness classes for district personnel; present parent information meetings as indicated, ie., growth and development, child abuse prevention, substance abuse; actively participate as a member of school(s) disaster preparedness team; supervise the performance of the assigned health technician; maintain and submit data for state annual reports and district monthly reports (Special Education, immunization, CHDP, scoliosis, etc.); other duties as assigned.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of: Medical terminology and basic diagnostic procedures; Evaluation techniques and strategies; Basic symptoms of communicable and other childhood related diseases; First aid and health care practices and procedures; Basic clerical skills including typing, filing, and indexing; Proper English usage, punctuation, grammar, and spelling.
Ability to:
Analyze situations and initiate an effective course of action; Learn and apply policies and procedures of the District's student health care program; Present a variety of health care training and instructional presentations to students and parent groups; Prepare and maintain accurate and complete health records and reports; Understand and carry out oral and written directions;
Establish and maintain an effective working relationship with those contacted in the course of work.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Education:
Bachelor's degree, including all courses to meet credential requirements.
Experience:
Clinical nursing experience and/or previous school nurse experience. Teaching experience desired.
REQUIRED LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATES
Valid California registered nurse license and credential authorizing health services in grade level K-8. Must possess a current Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation Certificate, Audiometry Certificate, American Heart Association BLS Instructor's Certification, and Medic First Aid Instructor's Certification.
Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver's License; have an acceptable driving record and qualify for insurability with the District's insurance carrier.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Be able to furnish an automobile during working hours and be willing to drive in the performance of assigned duties.

Must possess a current Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation Certificate, Audiometry Certificate, American Heart Association BLS Instructor’s Certification, and Medic First Aid Instructor’s Certification. Possession of valid and appropriate California Driver’s License; have an acceptable driving record and qualify for insurability with the District’s insurance carrier.
