CLASS TITLE: INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT – EARLY CHILDHOOD
EDUCATION (Level I)
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Manager, Preschool Programs and the supervision of the Early Childhood Education (ECE) Teacher, will be responsible for assisting with (1) providing instruction using principles and appropriate learning strategies to support children’s developmental growth in social-emotional development, cognitive development, language development, physical development and nutrition education; and (2) implementing in a Pre K setting an effective Early Childhood Education and Family Literacy Program in compliance with federal, state, and Madera County Superintendent of Schools’ guidelines for parents and their children.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Assist the Early Childhood Education (ECE) Teacher with:
Providing age appropriate, linguistically appropriate, and culturally supportive instruction.
Implementing appropriate curriculum for preschool children based on California Preschool Learning Foundations.
Implementing policies, procedures, and mandates as required.
Providing care, guidance, and positive experience for children enrolled in the program.
Completing daily attendance and recordkeeping procedures.
Responding to children’s education needs and identifying barriers.
In collaboration with ECE Teacher and Bilingual Family Advocate – Family Literacy/Early Childhood Education developing goals, objectives, and strategies to resolve identified barriers, access services, including linking services referred in order to support and strengthen the overall socio-economic and educational wellbeing of the child and family.
Ensuring regular contact with family, school, and various service providers to monitor progress, reevaluate, and adapt plan as necessary.
Assist with preparing requested reports and children’s program assessments in an accurate and timely manner.
Working with parents and community members to provide for the instructional needs of students.
Providing opportunities for parent education and involvement in an educational setting through interaction between parent and child, including school linked family literacy experiences between children, parents, and teacher.
Fostering positive relationships between students, staff, parents, and community members.
Supervising students to ensure their safety, both indoors and outdoors.
Monitoring student achievement, completing student assessments, and adjusting instruction in response to student data.
Working with other staff including administration, clerical, and bilingual family advocate.
Participate in County Office of Education, school, and department activities and meetings.
Participate in professional development activities as required.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Principles of learning, instruction, and assessment appropriate to Pre K level.

Maintain appropriate confidentiality about the status of students and families.
Assist with application of strategies appropriate to the age level of the students.
Assist with the gathering of student data to help determine student’s abilities and instructional needs.
Learn and appropriately apply County Office policies and procedures and other regulations related to the position.
Operate standard office equipment including a computer and assigned software.
Learn and apply current technology to assigned duties.
Oral and written communication skills.
Interpersonal skills including tact, patience, and courtesy.
Standard and accepted English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Standard and accepted telephone etiquette.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Six (6) units of Early Childhood Education or Child Development required and experience working in a child care center preferred. Incumbent must be working towards and complete the requirements for an Associate Teacher Permit within twelve months of his/her hire date.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of or the ability to obtain an Assistant Permit.
Possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license.
WORKING CONDITIONS:

Early Childhood Education classroom within a center or school indoor and outdoor.
Driving a vehicle to conduct work.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Mobility to move about, stand, and/or sit for extended periods, and access all locations in the work environment.
Dexterity of hands and fingers to appropriately control and manipulate objects, tools, materials and equipment used on the job, including a telephone and a computer.
Flexibility and strength to reach with hands and arms, bend and stoop.
Ability to hear and understand speech at normal room levels, and to hear and understand speech on the telephone.
Ability to speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal conversations and on the telephone.
Ability to see, read, and distinguish colors, with or without vision aids: computer screen, equipment used in the work environment, instructional materials, training materials, directions, rules, policies, calendars, agenda, manuals, and other printed materials.
Physical strength and agility to push, pull, squat, twist, turn, and lift and carry bulky objects.

Nine months and 3 hours per day within a Child Development Center Based Program within the past two years is preferred.
