Job Description / Essential Elements:    Print   
Under administrative direction from the Coordinator, Elementary Special Education, responsible for assessment, planning, goal development and providing appropriate intervention services to assist students in acquiring functional performance skills and to help students function independently. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Provides occupational therapy services to students; maintains a safe and orderly treatment area; conducts assessments of students to determine eligibility for occupational therapy; reviews reports from health care providers requesting occupational therapy and coordinates occupational therapy services with students' health care providers; collaborates with school nurse in the coordination of medical care protocols and acts as a resource to school personnel in interpreting occupational therapy services; plans and develops therapeutic intervention goals that are educationally relevant and will be used in students' educational programs; establishes a system of documentation that is professional, efficient and accountable and that conforms to state and individual agency policy; communicates results of evaluations and reports of occupational therapy services to the educational staff, parents, students and other professionals and agencies concerned with the students; re-evaluates students' individual occupational therapy plans on a regular basis; provides reports for use in Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) committees, attends IEP meetings as necessary and maintains progress notes on student records; facilitates inservice education and professional development for related service/occupational therapy staff; monitors the occupational therapy program goals by teaching paraprofessionals who are involved with the implementation of the intervention procedures; provides consultation to the educational system regarding student needs, professional needs and system needs in order for the system to achieve its goals and objectives; provides reassessments of students focusing on areas of need at intervals determined to be educationally relevant; communicates the needs of the occupational therapy program to the appropriate supervising school administrator; performs related duties as required. REGISTRATION AND LICENSE REQUIRED Valid registration by the American Occupational Therapy Association and a valid California driver's license. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: Intellectual, sensory, social, emotional growth patterns and physical development of children; Techniques used in the assessment and treatment of disabilities; Educational and developmental needs of children with specific disabilities; Application of occupational therapy techniques in working with children with disabilities. Ability to: Use a variety of modern methods, techniques and practices in occupational therapy; Make accurate assessments of the developmental status and educational needs of children; Understand the unique differences and needs of handicapped students and their parents; Work collaboratively with families; Work effectively with District personnel, community representatives, interdisciplinary teams and students; Participate in the IEP team process; Make oral presentations to large and small groups; Communicate effectively orally and in writing; Properly use and care for the materials, supplies and equipment employed in performing services as an occupational therapist. Work independently with little direction; Work confidentially with discretion. Experience: Work experience with children (ages zero to twenty-two) providing occupational therapy services; experience working with special needs children is desirable. Education: Persons with the experience, knowledge and abilities as stated are considered to have the necessary education. Physical Requirements: The ability to pass a physical examination deemed appropriate by the District and perform the physical requirements of the position.
