General:
Under the direction of the Principal, the Special Day Class (SDC) teacher will work with individuals at elementary level with exceptional needs, classroom teachers and principals, paraprofessionals, other specialists and parents in designing a program of diagnosis, prescription, implementation, and evaluation of instructional activities. The aim of this position will be to provide instructional planning, special instruction, tutorial assistance or other services to individuals with exceptional needs in special education programs and/or in regular classrooms.

Qualifications:
Credential: Valid California Education Specialist Instruction Credential-Mod/Severe; valid English Learner Authorization.

Specifications:
Provide integrated learning opportunities in appropriate subjects while implementing alternative and augmentative communication systems (i.e. PECS, etc.). Use data collection to support functional skills curriculum instruction and to demonstrate student achievement. Perform personal hygiene and adaptive behavior activities for students with moderate to severe disabilities (i.e. diaper changing, tube feeding, etc.). Demonstrate knowledge of appropriate teaching strategies and techniques for severely handicapped students. Demonstrate the knowledge, skill and ability to assess the needs of students and to create and administer Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). Demonstrate knowledge of handicapping conditions. Demonstrate the ability to conduct effective IEP meetings. Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with parents in regard to progress toward goals and changes in IEPs. Demonstrate cooperativeness in team planning and in supporting team decisions. Seek to improve professional competency through professional growth and keep abreast of current instructional practices. Demonstrate the ability to utilize technology as a teaching tool and in support of IEP goals. Maintain systems of record-keeping for short and long term evaluation of student progress toward goals. Utilize a variety of management techniques, including positive reinforcement of behavior and set limits for student behavior appropriate for severely handicapped students. Will complement the current school staff and strengthen and enhance the Special Education Department. Demonstrate an ability to work with the general education teachers on activities that include severely handicapped students. Perform related duties as assigned.
