ABOUT THE JOB: The current vacancy is for a part-time (3.5 hour) position in the Office of Student Services. However, this eligibility list will also be used to fill other vacancies which may occur during the life of the list. Under general supervision, works in a team environment to perform written translations and oral interpretations from English into a designated language or from a designated language into English; performs routine clerical duties; and performs other related work as assigned.    

JOB DUTIES: Translate and produces a variety of general, technical, legal and educational documents, materials and scripts between English and designated language for schools and district office staff; produces idiomatic translations considering the type of material and reader viewpoints; determine most accurate shades of meaning and makes corrections as needed; proofreads and edits translations for accuracy, context, readability and style; provides assistance to school sites or departments by reviewing translations performed by site or departmental personnel; provides voice-over narrations in the designated language for District audio and video recordings as needed; performs clerical duties such as document creating and/or editing, data input, and preparing and maintaining records and files; responds to inquiries regarding District translation and interpretation services and provide general information and assistance to district staff and parents; performs interpreter duties between school administrators, psychologists, speech therapists, nurses, teachers, students, and parents at hearings, meetings, conferences, Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings or other related reasons as requested; assists in the bilingual testing process of job applicants; assists with language assessments of incoming students as needed.

Education and Experience:  Graduation from high school or equivalent, and two years of experience equivalent to full-time work in translating and interpreting from English into a designated foreign language in a school district environment. Experience interpreting in Special Education meetings is desirable. Part-time experience will be considered and adjusted appropriately. Any other combination of training and experience which would likely provide the required skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.

A SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE REQUIRES THE FOLLOWING….

Knowledge of: Vocabulary related to a school district, medical, and legal environment; cultural nuances of designated language; current office practices, procedures, and equipment; specialized language software programs; correct language usage, vocabulary, and grammar in English and designated language.

Ability to: Read and write a designated foreign language fluently and to translate written English into that language; speak a designated foreign language fluently and interpret the designated language to English and English to the designated language; maintain records and reports; establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, parents, students, teachers, administrators, and the general public; work independently and as part of a team; prioritize work and meet deadlines; maintain confidentiality as required; estimate translation time for assignments and to produce translated materials with required timelines; use internet for research; learn new computer software programs.
