Developed by a coalition of San Diego civic leaders and educators, High Tech High (“HTH”) opened in September 2000 as a small public project-based charter school with plans to serve approximately 450 students. HTH has evolved into an integrated network of sixteen charter schools serving approximately 6,000 students in grades K-12 across four San Diego County campuses (Point Loma, Clairemont, North County, and Chula Vista). The HTH organization also includes a comprehensive adult learning environment including a Teacher Credentialing Program and the High Tech High Graduate School of Education, offering professional development opportunities serving national and international educators.
Job Function/Description
HTH embraces fully-inclusive classrooms, and Education Specialists provide essential support to meet the needs of students with disabilities in the general education setting. Education Specialists provide assessment services and, if needed, develop, implement, and supervise Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). In collaboration with classroom teachers and parents/guardians, Education Specialists support and monitor student progress towards IEP goals, and play a crucial role in communicating needs, services, and accommodations to staff and parents/guardians. Education Specialists must be patient, flexible, and empathetic when working with students, families, and colleagues. Additionally, Education Specialists should possess strong organization skills, be effective communicators and facilitators of large group discussions, and be able to speak and write clearly and succinctly using plain language.
The HTH Teacher:
- Encourages a culture of mutual respect and equitable practice
- Exhibits knowledge of student cognitive development and various learning styles
- Implements the four HTH Design Principles (equity, personalization, authentic work and collaborative design)
- Communicates effectively with students and families about classroom activities and student progress
- Demonstrates content knowledge, including the California Common Core Standards
- Sets high academic achievement expectations
- Identifies and supports students’ social, emotional, and behavior learning needs
- Implements Project-Based Learning techniques and strategies
- Facilitates and designs effective group work
- Provides timely feedback and collaborates with faculty to offer specialized support
- Fosters student growth through semi-annual Student-Led Conferences (SLC) and Presentations of Learning (POL)
- Showcases student work within the community
- Scaffolds instructional activities that facilitate engaging and appropriate learning opportunities
- Differentiates instruction based on feedback, needs, and learning levels
- Provides opportunities for student engagement through “Voice and Choice”
- Creates relevant and authentic learning experiences
- Implements backward design to align all lessons, activities, and assessments
- Designs formal and informal assessments that measure student progress

- Bachelor’s Degree required - Basic Skills (CBEST) - California Ed Specialist Mild/Moderate or Out-of-State/Country Credential - 1+year working with students as a Teacher, Intern, or Academic Coach preferred - English Learner Authorization, or CLAD, preferred
