Job Summary
Instructional Assistants Special Education assist a certificated teacher in providing instruction to individual or small groups of students in a special education learning environment, assist in the implementation of a student's behavior modification plan, monitor and report student progress regarding behavior and performance, and perform a variety of other instructional support duties. Assignments are throughout district at middle and high schools in Special Education classrooms. Typical assignments are 3.9, 5.5 or 6 hours per day.

Six months of job-related experience working with children is required. Experience may be paid or volunteer.
CPR and First Aid Certification: valid First Aid and Adult CPR certification(s) from an accredited organization such as the Red Cross or American Heart Association. Online First Aid certificates are acceptable, however, CPR certificate must include "hands on" classroom training. If you do not have valid certification(s), you may submit certifications to a test proctor if you are selected to move forward in the testing process. Certifications must be submitted by the date scheduled for the Qualifications Appraisal Interview.

Examination process: Completed applications are reviewed and candidates who meet the minimum qualifications participate in the following examinations:
The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) applies to Instructional Assistant classfiications. Applicants must demonstrate minimum qualifications by taking a Multiple Choice examination (Math & English; candidates must pass each section) weighted at 20% of overall exam score; Written Essay examination, weighted 30% of overall exam score, to be scheduled.
Candidates who pass the above examinations then complete a Qualifications Appraisal Interview weighted 50% of overall exam score. PLEASE NOTE: ***** EXAM components and weighting are subject to change pending restrictions due to COVID-19. *****
The competitive basis for this recruitment is established as dual certification: candidates who pass all exams are placed on an eligibility list in order of overall exam score. This recruitment is posted as continuous filing due to anticipated vacancies throughout the school year. The examination will be administered periodically throughout the year. Individual eligibility is valid for a six month period. Candidate names will be merged onto an existing list based on overall exam score each time the exam is administered.
If a candidate has taken the multiple choice and/or performance test for this San Dieguito Union High School District job title or similar job title within the past two years, candidate may be able to transfer the scores to this recruitment. The exam must be sufficiently similar, as determined by the Director, Classified Personnel. Prior to the application deadline, a request to transfer score(s) should be e-mailed to: barbara.bass@sduhsd.net . Transferring of exam scores does not apply to the Qualifications Appraisal Interview.
Veterans may be eligible for preference points on entrance examinations ("entrance" is defined as candidates who are not current employees of the District). Please attach a copy of your DD214 to your application.
Employment with San Dieguito Union High School District is contingent upon successful completion of post-offer background check, fingerprinting, physical exam including tuberculosis, drug and alcohol screening, and an Oath of Allegiance. Please note that our agency receives federal funding and must adhere to federal regulations; results which indicate marijuana use will be considered non-passing.
The probationary period for a new or promotional employee is six months or 130 days of paid service, whichever is longer. Management employees serve a probationary period of one year.
