HOLLISTER SCHOOL DISTRICT JOB TITLE: PRINCIPAL Kindergarten-8th grade PRIMARY FUNCTION: Under the supervision of the Superintendent, provide leadership in teaching and learning for both students and staff. Responsible for direction of the instructional program, operation of the school plant, participation in staff and student activities, and community leadership. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: The is a senior management position and a member of the district Administrative Team. The incumbent possesses a growth mindset and values the diversity of the Hollister community, staff, and students. They exercise broad discretion in the implementation of educational programs and employ innovative, evidence based strategies to ensure students excel socially, emotionally, and academically. The Principal supervises, directs, and evaluates the work of the school site. This position has highly visible contact with staff, parents and other community members. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: In concert with, and at the direction of the Superintendent, focuses on implementing the Board of Education’s adopted goals and articulating the vision of the district’s instructional program. Provides leadership to the staff in determining improvement objectives and identifying school needs as the basis for developing long and short-range plans for the school and assignment. Interprets and implements the District-approved curriculum program in the light of individual school needs. Upholds the highest possible standards regarding curriculum and its subsequent instructional components. Develops plans for the most effective use of curriculum materials, instructional supplies, equipment, building facilities, and school grounds. Make formative and summative appraisals of pupil progress. Reviews the policies, plans and performance indicators of the school in order to ensure ongoing growth in student performance. Evaluates and makes proper placement of pupils and prepares class schedules. Conducts conferences with students, parents, teachers and others as needed. Establishes an effective school administrative organization with clear lines of responsibility and with the necessary delegation of authority. Plans, supervises, and directs the operations of the school in accordance with District policies and procedures, and federal, State regulations. Develops school plans and organizational procedures for the health, safety, discipline, and conduct of students as established in district procedures. Serves as a District officer in communication between central administration, teachers, and classified employees in the schools. Maintains a high standard of morale for staff and students. Identifies, provides, assigns, and coordinates inservice growth opportunities for assigned school personnel. Helps plan, coordinate, and review the work of the resource teachers and instructional consultants. Supervises and evaluates the performance of all assigned personnel in accordance with the District’s guidelines for evaluation and assessment; recommends appropriate action in cases of substandard performance; and identifies and encourages individual teachers with leadership potential. Continues professional growth by taking classes on a regular basis in the areas of curriculum, instruction, leadership and improvement strategies. Develops and carries out a program of community relations as a means of interpreting and furthering the school program through the school site council, parent groups, and other community organizations. Attends Board of Trustees meetings to inform the Board regarding the school’s educational programs and progress. Prepares reports, correspondence, and maintain records as required. EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS: Training and Experience: BA required. MA preferred in educational administration or closely related field. Possession of a multiple subjects and/or a valid California credential. Five years of appropriate teaching experience, preferably with some experience at the elementary, secondary, and/or middle school levels. Administrative Services Credential or evidence of enrollment in a comprehensive administrative intern training programs. Demonstrated leadership experience. CLAD Certificate or willingness to enroll in a CLAD Certificate Program, or CLAD Equivalent Certificate. Knowledge: Must possess a high level of knowledge in curriculum, instructional strategies, current educational practices, local, State and Federal laws as it relates to areas of assignment. Bilingual (Spanish) ability an asset. Abilities: Ability to perform essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation; ability to organize and prioritize work, adjust to changing circumstances, act decisively and accept responsibility for decisions; work well with people, and possess good communication skills. Physical Effort/Working Environment: Light physical effort; occasional standing or walking; periodic handling of light weight parcels or supplies. Indoor work environment. A pre-placement physical examination may be required. Licenses and Certifications: A valid Class 3 California Driver’s License and evidence of appropriate automobile insurance based on DMV regulations may be required, in addition to a valid First Aide and CPR Certificate.

As Elementary School Principal, under the direction of the Superintendent, to serve as the chief administrative officer of an elementary school facility; to direct the formulation and implementation of operational procedures pertaining to an elementary school site; to plan, develop, and implement instructional objectives and designs, along with procedures to evaluate program effectiveness; to assist in the planning, development, and conduct of staff development and training programs; to plan, develop, and carry out public and community relations programs and activities; and to perform other related functions as directed.
