NURSE DEPARTMENT: Special Education REPORTS TO: Director-Special Services APPROVED: SALARY SCHEDULE: Certificated Teachers BASIC FUNCTION: Responsible for identifying, maintaining and improving the health status of students and school personnel in order to maximize the learning capabilities of the individual student in accordance with state law and district policies and procedures. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned. Supervises health testing program of students. Audiometric testing by qualified personnel in state mandated grade levels; referral to parents for appropriate medical evaluation. Vision testing by qualified personnel in state mandated grade levels; referral to parents for appropriate medical evaluation. Scoliosis screening by qualified personnel in state mandated grade levels; referral to parents for appropriate medical evaluation. Serves as advice nurse to principal, secretary and health clerks for injured/ill students at school. Assesses students with regard to communicable diseases; recommends exclusion and re-admission in accordance with state and county health policies; notifies parents by letter of exclusion from school attendance. Serves as health advisor to teachers, parents and students. Acts as liaison with community agencies, parents and students regarding health issues. Interprets recommendations from doctors to school personnel for adapting programs for students with special health needs. Trains personnel to support medically fragile students. Monitors tuberculosis assessment for students and employees mandated by the county. Monitors child health and disability documentation of all first graders for reports to state and county. ENTRANCE QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor of Science degree in nursing education.; satisfactory nursing experience. ABILITIES: ABILITY TO: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Effectively present information and respond to questions from staff , parents and students. Calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume. Apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exits. Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form. Develop effective working relationships with students, staff, parents and the school community. Communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing. Perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and depth perception. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: A Health Services/School Nurse Credential. A valid Registered Nurse License for the State of California. A valid California driver's license. An audiometrist credential is recommended.
