A. PRIMARY FUNCTION Under the direction of the School Principal, to provide a sound educational program utilizing the most effective instructional and motivational techniques, to work in close cooperation with students, parents, fellow teachers and administrators and to instruct, guide, supervise, discipline, and counsel; to enforce all rules, regulations, and policies of the state and local Boards of Education; to carry out all conditions, prescribed in the approved curriculum of the school and in the Education Code; and to perform other duties as required. B. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Duties may include, but are not limited to the following: 1. Professional Commitment a. Abide by the teachers Code of Ethics, The California Education Code and policies of the Carmel Unified School District. b. Participate in curriculum improvement and other in-service programs within the school of assignment and/or on a district level. c. Maintain professional growth through course workshops and meetings n current methods, materials and techniques. d. Set an example for students through a positive attitude, proper appearance, conduct and language. e. Plan and coordinate the work of student teachers and aides as applicable. 2. School Commitment a. Help each child in developing an understanding of him/herself leading to a positive self-concept and an awareness of the need for attitudes and actions that will result in good citizenship. b. Supervise and share in the responsibility for out-of-class and extra-curricular activities as assigned during the day and after school. c. Identify pupil needs and cooperate with others in assessing and helping to solve pupil’s health, attitude, social and learning problems. d. Be available in the school before the school starting time and after the close of the school as stipulated by law, unless otherwise defined. e. Select and requisition books, instructional aids, instructional supplies and maintain appropriate inventory records. f. Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an effective learning environment in the classroom and on the grounds. g. Care for all furniture, textbooks, apparatus, and other equipment entrusted to the teacher. h. Volunteer a reasonable amount of time to aid in supervision of extra-curricular activities that are under the general supervision of the school authorities. 3. Instructional Commitment a. Provide for optimum learning experiences within the framework of the prescribed curriculum including lesson planning and instructional objectives. b. Provide planned learning experiences that will adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil. c. Create a functional and attractive environment for learning. d. Evaluate pupils’ academic and social growth, keep appropriate records, prepare progress reports and communicate with parents as needed on each pupil’s progress. e. Make adequate arrangements for substitute teachers, including - Notification of necessary absence in advance to District Office; - Notification of pending absence to Principal’s Secretary; - Preparation of adequate lesson and seating plans for substitute. f. Attend meetings called by the principal or by those vested with this authority. g. Meet all classes punctually and for the entire prescribed time. h. Maintain a preparation-conference period each day, during which time the teacher is available for conference with students, parents, and assigned administrator. i. Enforce student behavior expectations both in and out of the classroom. j. Keep such records in respect to attendance, scholarship, and other matters as are prescribed by the principal, and inform parents on the educational growth, progress, and/or achievement of pupils, as well as attendance, punctuality and conduct. C. QUALIFICATIONS 1. Possession of current valid appropriate California credential(s). D. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Incorporated within one or more of the typical examples of this position are the following physical requirements 1. Ability to see for purposes of reading correspondence, documents and other printed matter and to observe students. 2. Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels in person and/or on the telephone. 3. Ability to communicate so others will be able to clearly understand a normal conversation in person and/or on the telephone. 4. Ability to operate instructional equipment with dexterity and in a safe and efficient manner. 5. Ability to routinely lift/carry instructional supplies, printed material and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds. E. WORKING CONDITIONS School working environment subject to bending, crouching or kneeling to assist students, pushing/pulling and lifting of instructional equipment and supplies, sitting on chairs and/or floor and learning over desks for prolonged periods of time and reaching in all directions.
