SCHOOL NURSE
POSITION DESCRIPTION: Provide health and nursing services to District students; refer students, parents or guardians to appropriate community resources for recommended health service programs; participate in health related Individual Educational Program (IEP), 504 & SST meetings for the assessment and Program placement of Special Education students as required.
This position will require weekend and evening hours as needed due to the emergence of COVID-19 cases across the District.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The responsibilities listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. District Responsibilities
- Monitor district compliance with State and County regulations, guidelines, and safety standards.
- Conduct state-mandated screening and follow-up of students including vision, and hearing; audits of immunization, dental, and physical exams.
- Submit reports to ensure compliance with District, State, and Federal policies.
- Serve on the District’s COVID Liaison Team to the Alameda County Department of Public Health.
- Support student/staff COVID contact tracing, testing, and daily health screening.
- Provide COVID-19 quarantine and isolation guidance to students, staff, and families.
- Serve as a member of the PUSD Health and Safety Steering Committee.
School Site Responsibilities
- Consult with, conduct in-service training for, and serve as a resource person for staff.
- Supervise the administration of medication(s) to students according to District’s Board Policy and Administrative Regulations.
- Immunization/Health Record-Keeping
- Review, follow-up, and document immunizations for all PUSD students.
- Review, follow-up, and document 1st grade physicals and oral health exams for kindergarteners.
Student/Family Responsibilities
- Assess and evaluate the health & developmental status of pupils.
- Interpret health and developmental assessments.
- Design and implement individual student health maintenance plans.
- Provide case management for students with chronic health conditions.
- Refer the pupil, parent, & guardian to community resources.
- Maintain communication to promote needed treatments.
- Interpret medical and nursing findings.
- Counsel & assist pupils & parents in health-related adjustments.
- Maintain communication with parents and all involved community practitioners.
- Interpret medical and nursing findings appropriate to the students’ individualized education programs and 504 plans and make recommendations to professional personnel directly involved.
KNOWLEDGE OF: State, Federal and local mandated reporting requirements; State school health mandates including specialized physical healthcare guidelines and medical emergency skills; disease prevention restorative measures; medication effects and proper administration procedures; proper operation of specialized health assessment instruments; modern medical terminology, equipment and techniques; accepted methods and principles of personal hygiene; diagnostic methods for medical conditions and diseases; IEP process; accepted testing techniques for hearing, vision and scoliosis and other screenings; interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy; public health agencies and local health care resources; health and safety regulations; modern office practices, procedures and equipment; record-keeping techniques
ABILITY TO: Develop, coordinate, and direct varied activities involved in a school health program; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other agencies, students, community members, and the general public; communicate effectively in Standard English both orally and in writing; operate a computer and assigned software; Communicate effectively and respectfully with staff, students and parents of diverse cultural and educational backgrounds; analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action during routine and emergency situations

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet while in the office, and moderately loud when in the field.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:
- Valid California driver’s license with acceptable driving record for the past three years.
- Public Health Nurse Certification (or completion of coursework). Experience in school nursing preferred.
- Valid California School Nurse Services Credential (or eligible for it).
- Valid California School Nurse Audiometric Certification (preferred or within 3 months of hire).
- Valid cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certificate and standard first-aid certificate
- Must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and provide verification of vaccination status as part of the hiring and onboarding process prior to an official offer of employment.
