ELK GROVE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT CLASS TITLE: IRRIGATION SYSTEMS TECHNICIAN BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, perform skilled work in the installation, repair and maintenance of District irrigation systems; maintain records related to work performed. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Perform skilled work in the installation, repair and maintenance of District irrigation systems; maintain a safe working environment for students, staff and the public. Participate in the planning and design of new irrigation systems and the retrofitting of existing irrigation systems. Maintain records related to work performed; requisition supplies and equipment in accordance with established guidelines; maintain inventory levels of supplies and equipment. Install new irrigation lines, valves and sprinkler heads; measure, cut, thread and install pipes, tubing and a variety of sprinkler, irrigation and plumbing systems fixtures; excavate trenches; interpret and work from blueprints, plans, schematic drawings, sketches and the computerized work order system. Operate a variety of hand and power tools and heavy equipment utilized in the irrigation field including a trenching machine, backhoe and tractor; utilize troubleshooting tools such as a volt meter and valve locator. Inspect existing irrigation systems to assure proper operation; troubleshoot malfunctions and make repairs to irrigation systems, electrical controllers, lines valves, various sprinkler heads and high and low voltage electrical irrigation pumps; change transformers; repair relays and related plumbing fixtures. Monitor settings and operation of sprinklers and controllers; check lawns and fields to assure proper moisture content. Communicate with other departments, administrators and outside contractors to exchange information, coordinate activities and resolve issues. Drive a District vehicle to various sites to conduct work; maintain vehicles in proper working condition including monitoring fluid levels and washing vehicles. Mix, form, pour and finish concrete for driveways and sidewalks. Assist in the repair of main water lines as assigned. Perform related duties as assigned. DEMONSTRATED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: Procedures, methods, techniques, materials, supplies, tools and equipment utilized in the installation, repair and maintenance of irrigation systems. Principles, practices and maintenance of electronic irrigation controllers used in irrigation systems. Applicable laws, codes, rules and regulations related to assigned activities. Proper operation of a variety of hand and power tools and heavy equipment related to the irrigation field. Health and safety regulations and procedures. Proper lifting techniques. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy. Basic record-keeping techniques. Oral and written communication skills. Shop math applicable to the assigned trade. ABILITY TO: Perform skilled work in the installation, repair and maintenance of District irrigation systems. Interpret and work from blueprints, plans, schematic drawings, sketches and the computerized work order system. Commercial and residential irrigation systems. Inspect existing irrigation systems to assure proper operation. Maintain and repair a variety of sprinkler heads including pop-up, rotary and impact. Identify underground pipes such as electrical, sewer and gas. Maintain records related to work performed. Apply and explain applicable laws, codes, rules and regulations. Operate a variety of hand and power tools and equipment. Troubleshoot and repair high and low voltage electrical irrigation pumps. Requisition parts and supplies according to established guidelines. Maintain inventory levels of supplies and equipment. Meet schedules and time lines. Make mathematical calculations. Observe health and safety regulations. Learn to operate a computer and assigned software. Observe legal and defensive driving practices. Work independently with little direction. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Speak, read and write English at a level required for satisfactory job performance. Maintain consistent, punctual and regular attendance. Move hands and fingers to operate a variety of hand and power tools and heavy equipment. Stand for extended periods of time. Walk over rough or uneven surfaces. Bend at the waist, kneel or crouch. Use proper lifting techniques. Reach overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally. See to read a variety of materials and perform irrigation repair duties. Perform heavy physical labor. Dig holes and trenches. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and two years of journey-level experience in the installation, repair and maintenance of a variety of irrigation systems and the installation, repair and maintenance of electro mechanical and electronic controllers used in electrical systems. LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Valid California Class C driver’s license. Floor-lift 72 pounds and arm-lift 44 pounds. WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: Outdoor environment. May drive a vehicle as needed. Noise from equipment operation. Seasonal heat and cold or adverse weather conditions. Regular exposure to fumes, dust and odors. HAZARDS: Chemical fumes. Working around and with machinery having moving parts.
