CENTRAL UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT Classified Job Description – English Learner Program Assistant June 2010 Revised August 2010 Class: 18 Adopted: August 10, 2010 ENGLISH LEARNER PROGRAM ASSISTANT BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: Under the direct supervision/direction of the English Learner Program Resource Teacher and general supervision of the Principal and Assistant Superintendent, facilitates the implementation of the Master Plan for English Learners and the improvement of instructional delivery for English Learners. This position is intended to support implementation of strategies and activities that increase student achievement. This individual assists with parent-home communication to include home visits as needed. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Assists in the identification of all English Learners, Initial-Fluent English Proficient and Reclassified students, to include collection of incoming freshmen data from feeder schools. 2. Meets with the feeder schools during their spring English Learner Advisory Committee meetings to provide parents information on English Learner services at the high school level. 3. Reviews scheduling and placements of all EL students by language designation and reports misplacements to the EL Program Resource Teacher. 4. Provides assistance as needed with the administration of CELDT. 5. Assists with the generation and distribution of student data as needed to teachers, counselors, and administrators for monitoring purposes. 6. Assists with the evaluation, monitoring and implementation of the reclassification process. 7. Monitors procedures to ensure that English learners and Reclassified students receive adequate and appropriate services. 8. Reviews English Learner academic progress quarterly. If a student is not passing two or more courses, makes appropriate arrangements for student/parent conference with teachers and counselor. 9. Attends Student Study Team meetings when an English Learner is involved upon request. 10. Translates written materials between Spanish and English, including correspondences, forms, applications, notices, instructional materials, and other written materials of the school. 11. Translates orally between Spanish and English for students, parents, and school staff. 12. Assists with regular communications with parents and students regarding student progress including but not limited to telephone contacts, conferences, home visits, informational brochures, and school site newsletters. 13. Provides instructional assistance to individual teachers and departments with the implementation of specific instructional strategies or special projects focused on increasing student achievement for English Learners (as requested by site administration or EL Program Resource Teacher). 14. Provides support to AmeriCorps members and/or tutors who are assigned to work with EL students by creating schedules and meeting with teachers to discuss their impact. 15. Maintains strict confidentiality regarding participant/project data and with all interaction with staff who are being assisted. (Other than when student safety issues or violations of Education Code or other state/federal law are evident.) 16. Assists with the coordination of English Language Advisory Committee meetings and may provide trainings for members as appropriate. 17. Maintains current inventory of equipment purchased with Economic Impact Aid and Title III funding in accordance with prescribed regulations. 18. Other related duties as assigned. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Education: Associate’s Degree Experience: Three years of general clerical experience and/or successful experience in working with students and parents, preferably including at least one year working in the public school system Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of strong interpersonal and communication skills; computer skills; research methods; proper English grammar, vocabulary, and composition; organizational skills; history of positive working relationships with groups and individuals, ability to work independently with minimal supervision; follow oral and written directives, deal effectively with a wide variety of personalities and situations; and communicate accurately the relationship of the English learner program to the educational goals of the district. Ability to speak, read, and write Spanish proficiently as measured by a district developed assessment of Spanish fluency. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS 1. Bachelor’s Degree PHYSICAL ABILITIES: • Visual capability to read handwritten or typed documents and the display screen of various office machines and equipment. • Able to conduct verbal communications and conversations. • Ability to hear normal range of verbal conversations (approx. 60 decibels). • Able to sit, stand, stoop, kneel, bend and walk. • Able to sit for sustained periods of time. • Able to climb slopes, stairs, steps and ladders. • Able to lift up to 30 pounds. • Able to carry up to 30 pounds • Able to operate office machines and equipment in a safe and effective manner. • Demonstrate manual dexterity necessary to operate calculator, typewriter and/or computer keyboard at the required speed and accuracy.
