GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
The Language, Speech and Hearing Specialist performs a variety of functions within the school environment to facilitate the learning process of students with communicative handicaps; diagnosing and prescribing individualized instructional programs for students in small groups and in individual therapy, through use of the appropriate diagnostic instruments. The Language, Speech and Hearing Specialist maintains a caseload in accordance with State recommendations and coordinates their Individual Education Plans to ensure success in special education and regular education classrooms.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
A. ASSESSMENT
1. Assesses students who are referred through the special education referral process by measuring their communicative development and interpreting the results to classroom teachers, administrators, other specialists and parents.
2. Participates in a multi-disciplinary team to determine needs and prescribe specific goals and objectives of students’ individual educational plan. Develops goals and objectives of students’ individual educational plan. Develops goals and objectives for Individual Education Plan.
3. Participates in bi-annual Voice Clinics.
B. EDUCATIONAL PLANNING
1. Provides remediation of communicative handicaps through individual and small group instruction.
2. Provides assistance to students to facilitate their success in regular program instruction by determining appropriate modifications.
3. Provides on-going evaluation of each student’s individual educational program modifying the plan as appropriate.
C. CONSULTATION
1. Consults with and serves other school personnel as a resource person regarding communicative development of students and the effect of communicative handicaps in the learning process.
2. Articulates with school personnel and parents regarding students’ communicative needs. Serves on IEP teams as appropriate.
3. Confers with other professionals within the Language, Speech and Hearing Department and with other members of the Special Education Department.
4. Confers with other public and private schools and/or agencies as appropriate.
5. Provides appropriate inservice to staff and parents.
D. OTHER DUTIES
1. Maintains knowledge and practice of current district, state and federal regulations pertaining to Special Education.
2. Maintains records, files and reports as required by district, state and federal regulations.
3. Continues independent professional growth through the use of journals, workshops and classes as provided by the district.
QUALIFICATIONS
A. CREDENTIAL
As required by the State of California for service as a Language, Speech and Hearing Specialist in the public schools.
