Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Director of Special Education, the basic role of the Special Education Paraprofessional is to increase the likelihood that each student will receive the necessary academic assistance and other support that would facilitate his/her success in attaining the goal of full-time placement in the regular classroom. A Special Education Paraprofessional may work with students on a one-to-one basis or in a small group in the Special Education room or in the student’s classroom.

INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT LEARNING CENTER

SPECIAL EDUCATION PARA PROFESSIONAL

DEFINITION:

Under the supervision of the Learning Center Teacher, or Special Education and site administrators, the basic role of the Learning Center Aide, is to provide support to students with Individual Education Programs (IEPs) and general education students who have been identified by the student study team (SST).  The Learning Center Aide assists in large or small group instruction or in individual assistance, in the learning center, regular classroom, or other instructional setting.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Assist special education students in those academic areas identified in the students’    Individual Education Program (IEP) and general education students, as directed.

2. Work with heterogeneous groups of students, including general education students.

3. Provide academic, behavior, and functional skills support as identified in a student's IEP or student study team plan.

4. Facilitate and support social interactions and foster the development of positive    relationships between students with disabilities and their non-disabled peers.

5. Utilize positive strategies to manage student behaviors.

6. Coordinate special education services with the regular school programs for each    individual with exceptional needs enrolled in the Learning Center Program.

7. Perform clerical duties as needed, such as scheduling meetings, filling out forms, and writing in communication logs.

8. Adapt and modify curriculum and activities in conjunction with Learning Center Teacher.

9. Attend meetings and participate in in-service training as assigned.

10.As appropriate per the IEP, assist with or provide health care to students under the    direction of specialized nurse or teacher; i.e. bathroom, feeding, dressing, medical needs.

11.Perform other duties as assigned by supervising teacher or Site administrators.

12. Ability to work independently with students

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

1. College degree or AA degree from a community college is preferred.

2.  Previous experience working with children is preferred.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:

1. Basic subjects taught in District schools, including mathematics, grammar, spelling,    language and reading

2. Basic instructional strategies and techniques

3. Basic knowledge of technology skills

4. Safe practices in classroom and playground activities

Ability to:

1. Demonstrate tolerant, accepting attitude toward all students and communicate    respectfully and effectively with students and other staff members

2. Demonstrate willingness to carry out teacher-designed instructional procedures

3. Communicate positively with student and family members

4. Demonstrate a commitment to provide the assistance for student to be a productive    member of his/her classroom

5. Facilitate social relationships between students with disabilities and their non-disabled peers.

6. Apply positive management techniques for small groups in classroom, school, and    community settings.

7. Maintain utmost confidentiality of student matters, and work with discretion.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

1. Valid First Aide and CPR certificate

2. Follow Universal Precautions Policy

EVALUATION:

The site administrator will evaluate the employee with input from the appropriate supervising teachers.

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT:

Hours to be determined at time of hire, plus required workdays.
