BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, assist a certificated teacher in providing instruction to individual or small groups of students assigned to a designated special education instructional program; perform a variety of clerical duties in support of classroom activities.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Assist a certificated teacher in providing instruction to individual or small groups of students assigned to a designated special education instructional program; monitor and oversee student drills, practices and assignments in various subjects; confer with the teacher concerning lesson plans and materials to meet student needs.
Perform a variety of clerical duties in support of classroom activities such as preparing, typing, duplicating and filing instructional materials; grade student tests and assignments; record grades; maintain student records and files as assigned; answer telephones and schedule activities as assigned.
Assist students in completing classroom assignments, homework and projects; assure student understanding of classroom rules and procedures; assist students by answering questions, providing proper examples, emotional support, friendly attitude and general guidance.
Assist teachers in maintaining appropriate order and student conduct in the classroom; observe behavior of students to assure safety; assist in resolving student disputes; refer serious discipline problems to the teacher or administrators.
Perform first aid in emergency situations according to established procedures; observe health and safety rules and procedures.
Monitor children on the playground, on educational field trips and during lunch time; monitor students getting on and off school buses as assigned; ensure health and safety regulations are observed.
Observe and control behavior of students in the classroom according to approved procedures; escort students to and from classrooms and monitor students on buses as assigned; report progress regarding student performance and behavior.
Assist assigned teacher with the implementation of lesson plans; assist in the development and implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEP's) as assigned; administer various tests as directed.
Operate a variety of classroom and office equipment including a computer, copier, overhead projector and laminator as assigned.
Perform routine First Aid and CPR; may be assigned to maintain daily documentation of specialized physical health care services and procedures.
Provide classroom support to the teacher by setting up work areas and displays, and distributing and collecting paper, supplies and materials.
Assure the health and safety of students by following established practices and procedures; maintain learning environment in a safe,orderly and clean manner.
Attend meetings and in-services as assigned; attend and participate in IEP meetings and prepare related forms as directed; confer with parents regarding student performance and behavior as necessary.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Graduation from high school, or equivalent, AND one year experience working with children in an organized setting is preferred, AND two years of study (48 units) from a recognized college or university, or possession of an Associate's degree or meet a rigorous standard of quality and be able to demonstrate, through a formal academic assessment, knowledge of and ability to assist in instructing reading, writing and mathematics.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Graduation from high school, or equivalent, AND one year experience working with children in an organized setting is preferred, AND two years of study (48 units) from a recognized college or university, or possession of an Associate's degree or meet a rigorous standard of quality and be able to demonstrate, through a formal academic assessment, knowledge of and ability to assist in instructing reading, writing and mathematics.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification issued by the American Red Cross or any agency authorized by the American Red Cross.
- Valid First Aid certification issued by the American Red Cross or any agency authorized by the American Red Cross.
