MECHANIC II
DEFINITION
Under general supervision, performs skilled work at the journeyman level in the maintenance and repair of school buses, cars, and related equipment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Inspects and repairs gasoline, diesel, alternative fueled buses and other vehicles.
Changes clutches, transmissions, engines, axles, and other major parts of school buses and other equipment.
Rebuilds carburetors, distributors, brake systems, injectors, pumps.
Services vehicles with fuel, oil, and grease.
Checks and cleans radiators; steam cleans major components; changes and repairs tires and tubes.
Adjusts and replaces necessary units and related parts including coils, condensers, points, spark plugs, and fuel pumps.
Trouble shoots and repairs electrical systems.
Performs gas and arc welding repair; performs minor body repair; replaces or repairs upholstery; spot paints.
Replaces vehicle glass; periodically inspects vehicles for proper mechanical operation; maintains vehicle service and operation records; maintains records on small stock of fast moving repair parts and supplies; makes service and road calls, and performs minor maintenance on stalled or disabled vehicles.
Certifies smog test compliance of District vehicles.
Performs related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Standard practices, equipment, and tools of the heavy duty mechanic trade;
Operating principles of automotive equipment and related parts and accessories;
Provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code and the Education Code, applicable to the operation of
vehicles in transporting students;
First aid practices.
Ability to:
Adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems;.
Understand and carry out oral and written instructions;
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and administrators;
Perform gas and arc welding;
Make repairs and adjustments to diesel and gasoline power equipment.
Experience
A minimum of two years of experience in vehicle maintenance and repair which must include one year
in heavy gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles.
Education
Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by courses in vehicle repair and equipment technology.
Other Requirements
Possession of a current California Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a passenger endorsement;
possession of a standard heavy-duty vehicle mechanic tool set.

Resume Two (2) Letters of Recommendation dated within the past year (Not a Prerequisite to apply for current FCUSD employees) THIS JOB DESCRIPTION IS CURRENTLY UNDER REVIEW. The successful candidate will have good interpersonal skills, excellent verbal communication skills, good IT, diagnostic and organization skills. Experience: A minimum of two years of experience in vehicle maintenance and repair which must include one year in heavy gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles. ASE Diesel Certification is preferred but not required. Education: Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by courses in vehicle repair and equipment technology. Other Requirements Possession of a current California A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a passenger endorsement; possession of a standard heavy-duty vehicle mechanic tool set.
Upon Employment - Department of Justice Criminal Background Check - Current TB test (Valid for 4 years) - Pre-Employment Physical Evaluation (Lift Test) demonstrating sufficient strength, mobility and range of motion to arm and floor lift 50 pounds in an employee physical entrance evaluation. This test will not be administered until AFTER you have been recommended for the position.
