King City Union School District Job Title: PARAEDUCATOR SUMMARY Under the supervision of the program Administrator and the direction of the classroom teacher, the Paraeducator works with students individually, and in small groups to assist in providing services to meet the needs of students. In addition, provides necessary translation and clerical services in support of the instructional effort. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS Paraeducator levels are distinguished by their schooling units and/or years of experience as a Paraeducator. Paraeducators may be assigned to primary or secondary grade classes, their duties varying somewhat depending on the mental age and physical requirements of the student. Paraeducators need not perform their duties in the physical presence of the teacher to which they are assigned, but the teacher shall retain responsibility for the instruction and supervision of students in their charge. Paraeducators shall not assign grades to pupils. The ability to speak both English and Spanish may be a requirement for some of the assignments. (Paraeducators are required to learn Child Protection Laws and to abide by all Child Abuse Reporting requirements??) No Paraeducator shall give out any personal information concerning any pupil who is not his/her own child or ward, except under judicial process to any person other than a teacher or administrator in the school which the pupil attends. A violation of this section may be cause for disciplinary action including dismissal. (C.E.C. 13599.5) ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. This list is intended to be illustrative and does not represent an exhaustive list of duties and responsibilities. Incumbents may not perform all duties and responsibilities listed. Other duties may be assigned. Assist teachers in the conduct of lessons and other classroom activities. Assists students with classroom and homework assignments. Helps sit up the classroom for instruction. Assists with cleaning up the classroom. Works with individual students and small groups as directed by the teacher. Assists in arranging bulletin boards and other displays towards the improvement of the classroom environment. Types and reproduces teacher prepared tests, worksheets, and other classroom materials. Reviews and corrects student paperwork. Records student accomplishment or progress in teacher grade book. May provide translation during phone conferences and personal conferences with limited English speaking parents. Operates various audiovisual equipment. Performs related duties as required. QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE Possesses a High School diploma or a GED certificate. Pass a District Paraeducator competency exam or possesses an AA degree or completion of 2 years ( 48 units) of higher education. Initial salary schedule placement is dependent upon the employees education level at the time of hire. LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read and comprehend documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals, also documents such as simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Skills in a language other than English may be preferred for specific special needs students. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide and complete basic math skills in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret graphs. REASONING ABILITY Ability to independently problem solve and apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Valid California drivers license preferred. PHYSICAL ABILITIES The physical abilities described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
