About the Position: The full-time, tenure track instructor will enjoy a 175-Day work schedule. The selected candidate will be the Department Chair for the Geology, Oceanography, and Environmental Science departments.   This will require duties such as hiring, coordinating, and mentoring adjunct faculty and student assistants, scheduling classes for these departments, managing department budgets, program planning and assessing outcomes, and other duties in addition to teaching classes in these departments.

The position begins on Monday, August 16, 2021 pending Governing Board ratification. Classes may be in a traditional "in class" setting, online or hybrid format, scheduled over summer and/or winter months, and at various campus locations; days, evenings, and/or weekends.

About the Department: The Geology, Oceanography, and Environmental Science programs consist of a variety of introductory, transferable general education curriculum. The diverse offering of courses assists students in increasing their awareness, understanding, and appreciation of our planet’s unique and varied natural systems. The entire program collectively contributes to the mission and specific objectives of Cabrillo College in a variety of ways. A wide range of topics and concepts in the earth, marine, and environmental sciences are taught to a diverse group of students. Basic educational skills, including how to achieve academic success, are provided in distinct learning environments. The courses offered benefit students by challenging them to think critically, act professionally, develop comprehensive ideas, be sustainably minded citizens, and effectively communicate both orally and in writing. We present students with some of the most important challenges known to humanity: awareness and preparation for natural disasters, the need to conserve and sustain our planet’s natural systems, and understand the cause and effect of challenges such as global climate change and sea level rise.

Students study in lecture, lab, and field settings regularly using computers and a variety of laboratory tools such as stereo dissecting and compound microscopes, nautical charts, and materials such as beach sand, plankton, scales, and topographic and bathymetric maps. Students also have the opportunity to use field instruments designed for fresh and salt water monitoring, marine navigation, mapping, and surveying. Team, service, and project-based learning are a growing part of student engagement.  This diverse learning environment prepares the students to be eligible to transfer to a four-year institution or to be successful in other Cabrillo College classes in order to obtain an A.S., A.A., or A.S.-T degree.

The supportive faculty in the Geology, Oceanography, and Environmental Science Departments have been effective as evidenced by the high number of students who successfully complete courses and fulfill their physical science general education requirements. Students majoring in geology, biology, marine science, environmental science, chemistry, physics, astronomy, and engineering who take these courses to gain valuable skills and to prepare for transfer to four-year colleges.

Starting Salary Range: $57,157 to $87,673 per year, salary placement determined by documented education and experience; maximum initial salary step placement on the faculty salary schedule is step 9. An annual doctoral stipend of $3,816 is granted to eligible faculty.
