REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Credentials and/or skills:
Hold/qualify for appropriate valid CA Special Education Credential authorizing the teaching of visually impaired students or Teacher-in Training Agreement.  Proof of valid CA driver’s license and minimum amount of liability insurance required by law.
SUMMARY OF POSITION:
Under the administration direction of the West Orange County Consortium for Special Education (WOCCSE), will identify, assess, recommend and provide instruction for students with visual and multiple handicaps, ages birth through 21 years.  Students are served in the public school setting in an itinerant program.  Responsible for the supervision and evaluation of instructional aides assigned to the Program for Visually Impaired.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Identifies, assesses, recommends and provides instruction for students with visual and multiple disabilities.
Evaluates individual student needs in the following skill areas: functional vision, concept development, academic achievement, communication, sensory-motor, socio-emotional, daily living and career/vocational.
Provides consultation related to the needs of visually impaired students to classroom teachers, administrators, support staff, and parents or care providers.
Develops an individualized approach in teaching visually impaired students; prepares materials and teaches Braille reading and writing; provides instruction in the use of media/equipment used in teaching the visually impaired.
Participates in the development of curriculum for visually impaired students.
Makes referrals to agencies providing services to the visually impaired as necessary.
Understands/interprets medical reports and dispenses information as appropriate.
Participates in the selection of books, instructional equipment and materials; maintains an inventory of such materials.
Maintains state attendance register; registers students with the CA State Department of Education for funding purposes.
Directs instructional aides assigned to the Program.
Maintains files/records for each student.
Attends workshops, staffings, inservices, conferences and other related professional meetings as required.
Operates a personal computer, standard office equipment and specialized visually impaired media/equipment.
Operates a motor vehicle.  Ability to drive own vehicle from one site to another as necessary.
Performs other related essential functions as assigned.
Environment:
Indoor and/or outdoor work environment.
Physical Abilities:
Hearing and speaking to exchange information and make presentations in classroom or departmental meetings, sitting or standing for extended periods of time, and seeing to read and evaluate textbooks and other materials. Ability to enter data into a computer with or without vision aids.

 

 

 

Stand, walk, stoop, reach overhead, grasp, push, pull and move, lift and/or carry up to 25 pounds to waist height.
