PROPOSED CLASS TITLE: AUTISM INTERVENTION ASSISTANT
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Autism Intervention Specialist and Diagnostic Team, assist in providing instruction to individuals and small groups of students with autism. and behavioral challenges in the classroom, home or community according to IEP’s; monitor and record student progress regarding behavior and performance, assist students in developing various self-help, language, social community and independent living skills.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Incumbents in the Autism Intervention Assistant classification are assigned to autistic classrooms and specific students with autism who have services noted on IEP’s. Incumbents are recruited and specifically trained in special education and participate in a minimum of 10 hours of training by the Specialist and/or Diagnostic Team (for which a test must be passed) in areas related to autistic needs and characteristics. TEACCH, Pivotal Response and discrete trial therapies. Incumbents typically work in a one on one situation either in the classroom or in the home or community as per IEP.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Tutor individual students with autism, reinforcing and implementing instruction as directed by the Autism Intervention Specialist.
Work with individual students in a variety of areas such as sensory stimulation, responding and attending skills, language development, academic concepts, and social skills development.
Confer with Specialist, Diagnostic Team, and parents concerning programs and materials to meet student needs; utilize appropriate methods of instruction to achieve goals and objectives set forth in the IEP.
Participate in restraint training to assure physical safety of students and assistant when controlling acting out behavior. Observe and control behavior and interactions of students according to approved procedures; exercise positive restraint techniques according to established procedures; record and report progress regarding student performance and behavior.
Prepare instructional materials for individual students for use in one to one and small group sessions as indicated on IEP.
Prepare students for and assist students in mainstreaming classes according to established procedures.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Bending. kneeling or crouching
Dexterity of hands to operate instructional equipment and prepare materials
Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person and on telephone.
Seeing to monitor students.
Moderately heavy lifting -over 40 lbs. at times (i.e. if student requires restraint)

Requirements / Qualifications

Valid First Aid Certificate issued by Red Cross within six (6) months of employment.
