Job Description:  DIRECTOR OF TRANSPORTATION                     Classification: Management

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Under general direction, plans, organizes and supervises the operation of the District transportation system; supervises the maintenance and repair of all vehicles; and does related work as required.  The Board of Education designates this position as Management.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:  Under the immediate supervision of the Chief Business Officer; supervises classified staff as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Schedules and assigns drivers; trains, instructs, supervises, and evaluates the performance of assigned personnel. E
Inspects or supervises inspection of vehicles, developing preventive maintenance schedules to maintain vehicles in compliance with safety requirements. E
Assigns or arranges repairs including major overhauls; selects and purchases automotive parts and supplies for mechanical repair and maintenance. E
Prepares and revises bus schedules and routes, considering traffic hazards and fluctuations in numbers of passengers in various areas. E
Schedules and routes buses for co-curricular events. E
Computes costs and prepares invoices for special trips and for services to other school districts. E
Prepares time, material, and cost estimates; maintains records and submits reports, and prepares preliminary budget requests. E
Confers with school authorities and bus drivers on student passenger disciplinary matters. E
Participates in formulating district policies which relate to his/her duties. E
Provides input to the district negotiating team on matters related to his/her duties, and attends negotiations sessions as requested. E
Prepares the district budget pertaining to his/her department. E
Uses initiative and independent judgment in carrying out duties. E
Implements and carries out district programs related to his/her department. E
Coordinates the implementation of district programs as they affect and relate to his/her department. E


KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of:

Laws related to school bus transportation and vehicle codes
Budget preparation and control           
Vehicle operation, inspection, maintenance and repair

Ability to:

Communicate effectively orally and in writing
Develop positive working relationships with subordinates, peers and supervisors
Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action
Effectively supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:   

High School Diploma and increasingly responsible positions in a school transportation system, including at least three years of supervisory responsibility.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Valid California Class A or B driver’s license.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Working conditions may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Environment:
Office or outdoor environment, vehicle maintenance facility, school bus or other vehicles. Contact with  hostile or abusive individuals with unpredictable behavior.

Physical Abilities:
Hear and speak to communicate effectively in person and on the telephone
See to read, prepare documents and reports, and view a computer monitor
Dexterity of hands and fingers to demonstrate activities, prepare materials, and operate a computer keyboard

Develop and maintain positive working relationships with subordinates, peers and supervisors.. Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action. Effectively supervise and accurately evaluate the performance of assigned staff. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: High School diploma or higher degree and increasingly responsible positions in a school transportation system, including at least three years of supervisory responsibility.

If selected for the position, out-of-district applicants must be T.B. tested and fingerprinted. A practical skills test may be administered at the time of interview.
