BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of the Athletic Director and the supervision of the High School Principal, provide instruction on the prevention, evaluation, management, treatment and rehabilitation of physical injuries to students and athletes engaged in various school sports and physical education activities; serve as a liaison between the students, parents, coaches and physicians in evaluation, management, care, and long-term rehabilitation of athletic injuries.

 

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:

Identifies, evaluates and provides immediate first aid medical attention including taping, wrapping, bracing, strapping, and padding to prevent and/or minimize the risk of injury or re-injury.

Recommends and implements appropriate preventative measures to avoid and/or minimize the risk of incurring athletic injuries, illness and conditions.

Develops and implements individualized rehabilitation and reconditioning programs for injured students, at one's own initiative or as directed by a physician.

Assists students with specialized therapeutic exercises by performing demonstrations and ensuring students' understanding of proper exercise techniques and procedures.

Evaluates, determines and provides recommendation on the eligibility of athletes to return to athletic activities following injury rehabilitation.

Assists with physical examinations and physical fitness screening.

Follows Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) regulations regarding confidential student information.

Maintain records related to student injuries, treatments, progress and assigned activities; prepare student injury reports and documentation.

Coordinates the issuance, proper fitting, collection and inventory of all regular and protective equipment.

Assists in an off-season physical training, conditioning, maintenance of physical fitness, and rehabilitation as required.

Implements physician instructions related to athletic injuries and treatment.

May counsel and advise athletes on health related issues, including nutrition and substance abuse

May assist in receiving, storing, issuing and maintaining inventory of supplies and equipment utilized in athletic programs.

May provide direction to student workers/assistants

Perform related duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Principles of anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, and nutrition
  • Diagnostic signs and symptoms and related treatment of various physical injuries
  • Principles, techniques and procedures used in the prevention, care and rehabilitation of athletic injuries
  • The use of various therapeutic treatments and conditioning programs 
  • First aid medical procedures, including CPR Safety guidelines and regulations in athletic and therapeutic activities
  • Basic record-keeping and report preparation techniques 
  • Inventory methods and practices

 ABILITY TO:
  • Operate a variety of first aid, therapeutic and adaptive equipment
  • Administer first aid and physical therapy
  • Operate athletic rehabilitation and weight equipment
  • Develop and implement individualized rehabilitation and reconditioning for injured students
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, coaches and faculty regarding physical injuries
  • Understand and apply various technical and all other directions issued by physicians
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:
A Bachelor's Degree, from an accredited college or university, in athletic training, health, physical education, exercise science, kinesiology or a related field.

EXPERIENCE:
At least six months of paid and/or volunteer experience working in an athletic training environment.

LICENSES AND OTHER CERTIFICATIONS:

  • A Valid National Athletic Trainers Association Board Certification
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certificate
  • American Red Cross First Aid Certificate
  • A Valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License

WORKING CONDITIONS:


ENVIRONMENT:
Outdoor work environment; subject to seasonal heat and cold and adverse weather conditions.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
Stand and walk for extended periods of time over rough or uneven surfaces; kneel and bend at the waist; climb; lift, carry and/or move heavy materials and equipment weighing up to 75 pounds; manipulate hands and fingers to operate athletic equipment
