Job Summary
Substitute Teachers perform the instructional and classroom management processes for teachers when absent from their classroom role. The duties of a substitute teacher include managing attendance; explaining in-class/homework assigned by the regular teacher; and maintaining classroom cleanliness, student participation, and student behavior.

Prior to the offer of employment, you are responsible for providing the following employment requirements prior to your Live Scan fingerprinting appointment with the District Office: -Negative tuberculosis valid within the last 4 years
- 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit (Commission of Teacher Credentialing)
- Multiple Subject Teaching Credential - General Subjects (Acceptable in lieu of 30-Day Sub Permit)
- Single Subject Teaching Credential - Other (Acceptable in lieu of 30-Day Sub Permit)

Comments and Other Information
A substitute’s workday is 6.5 hours exclusive of the site defined lunch period. During the 6.5 hour work day, a day-to-day substitute may be asked to cover classes without additional compensation on what would normally be the regular teacher’s preparation period.
A substitute teacher working more than 3.25 hours exclusive of a lunch period is paid at the full day rate.
Substitutes who work a complete scheduled minimum day are paid at the daily rate.
Substitute teachers are required to do the same duties as would fall on the day(s) worked to the regular teacher for whom they are substituting. This includes, but is not limited to, such things as bus duty, lunchroom duty outside of their thirty (30) minute duty-free lunch, recess supervision, and rally/assembly supervision. Substitutes are not expected to perform the regular teacher’s paid extra duty assignments, such as coaching.
Substitutes do not earn fringe benefits such as sick leave, vacation, and holiday pay or health and welfare benefits. However, they may elect at the time of initial employment to be covered under the California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS).
*Substitutes may serve for no more than thirty (30) days for any one teacher during the school year, except in a special education classroom, where the holder may serve for no more than twenty (20) days for any one teacher during the school year.
