CLASS TITLE: SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKER/SCHOOL COUNSELOR

BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of the Principal, provide counseling and guidance services to students; make referrals to other community resources, support groups and social service agencies as appropriate.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: Provide individual and group guidance counseling to students; confer as needed with parents, teachers and others regarding student needs including school achievement and behavior. E Refer students to social service and governmental agencies, support groups and other community resources as appropriate. E Communicate with District personnel, school staff, parents, students and public agencies regarding student placement, referrals, services and related issues. E Plan, organize and coordinate staff development activities for support personnel, teachers and administrators. E Prepare records and reports related to the assignment; prepare letters to parents, progress reports, referrals and related documents. E Maintain current knowledge of community resources and recent trends in counseling techniques. E Assist in providing schoolwide prevention and intervention strategies. E Serve as liaison to other agencies and community organizations; maintain relations between school, the community and community services. E Utilize diagnostic and assessment procedures as appropriate; gather, organize and interpret data regarding students to teachers and parents. E Conduct home visits and provide assistance to parents as needed. E Prepare and deliver oral presentations as requested; attend various meetings, conferences and seminars. Perform related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE OF: Effective personal and academic counseling techniques and procedures. Counseling theory, ethics and associated legal confidentiality requirements. Laws regarding minors and child abuse reporting. School Social Worker/School Counselor – Continued Page 2 Applicable sections of the State Education Code and other applicable laws, rules and regulations related to assigned activities. Normal and abnormal child behavior and development. Behavior modification techniques and strategies. Student assistance programs. Community referral resources. Diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of District students. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy. Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary. Record-keeping techniques.
ABILITY TO: Provide counseling and guidance services to students. Make referrals to other community resources, support groups and social service agencies as appropriate. Plan, prepare and conduct individual and group counseling sessions. Read, interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Maintain current knowledge of program rules, regulations, requirements and restrictions. Set limits and personal boundaries for students. Assist with curriculum development. Communicate effectively with staff members and parents Complete work with many interruptions. Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action. Work independently with little direction. Meet schedules and time lines. Work confidentially with discretion. Maintain records and prepare various reports, including confidential materials. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Sit or stand for extended periods of time. Walk around the campus. Lift heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Exchange information with others. Monitor student behavior.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to: bachelor's degree in psychology, social work or related field and sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Pupil Personnel Services Credential with specialization in school social work supplemented by 45 semester hours in a Commission accredited professional preparation program including a practicum School Social Worker/School Counselor – Continued Page 3 experience working in an educational setting or a Pupil Personnel Services Credential with specialization in school counseling supplemented by 30 hours in a Commission accredited professional preparation program including a practicum experience in an educational setting. Some positions in this classification may be required to speak in a designated second language. Successful passage of the CBEST. Valid California driver's license.
ENVIRONMENT: Office and classroom environment. Constant interruptions.
HAZARDS: Exposure to potentially volatile and emotional student and dissatisfied parents.
