KERMAN UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT Job Description POSITION: Principal (A Management Position) 304 SCOPE: High School ACCOUNTABILITY: The High School Principal shall be under the direct supervision of the Superintendent/designee and will adhere to applicable laws, rules and regulations of the state, county and school district governing board. The Principal shall be familiar and comply with all collective bargaining contracts pertinent to this position. PRIMARY PURPOSE: To serve as the educational leader and chief executive of the school; to be responsible for direction of the instructional program, operation of the school plant, participation in staff and student activities; and exercise leadership in the community. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Curriculum 1. Direct the selection, evaluation, implementation and continuous improvement of research based curriculum, instructional strategies, instructional programs and assessment procedures in cooperation with district administrators to ensure instructional programs meet student needs and district requirements. 2. Direct the educational activities of the school to align the written, taught and tested curriculum to the Instructional Action Plan. 3. Develop the master schedule of classes, including teaching assignments and class loads. Professional Development 4. Direct the selection, implementation and evaluation of staff development activities to support the continuous improvement of curriculum, instructional strategies and assessment procedures. Leadership 5. Plan, implement, supervise and evaluate instructional activities, extracurricular events, special programs and plant operations. Confer with district office personnel regarding staff, programs, students, finances and legal requirements. 6. Ensure the health, safety and welfare of students; oversee attendance, behavior management, counseling, guidance and other support services; provide individual academic and personal counseling to students and parents. 7. Coordinate all facets of the school operation in preparation for opening and closing of the school year. 8. Direct the maintenance of comprehensive files pertaining to students, school personnel, plant facilities, inventories, financial information and contracts at the site. 9. Administer federal, state and district regulations and directives in a prompt and thorough manner. Maintain compliance and required documents. 10. Directs a variety of student activities designed to encourage increased involvement in the school program and to foster positive student attitudes. 11. Hold ex-officio membership on all committees related to the schools operations. 12. Appoints a responsible representative to represent the school in all inter-school relationships. 13. Foster collegiality and team building amongst staff members. 14. Communicate expectations to staff and monitor classroom performance with regard to instructional strategies, classroom management and communication with students and their families. 15. Conduct conferences about student and school issues with parents, students and teachers. 16. Demonstrate professional, ethical and responsible behavior. Serve as a role model for all campus staff. 17. Align school goals with board policies. Articulate the schools goals and objectives to the community and solicit its support in realizing the mission. 18. Use appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent commitment. 19. Keep informed of the latest curricular and instructional trends and developments by attending conferences and workshops; actively participates in professional organizations. Personnel 20. Interview, select, supervise and evaluate certificated and classified personnel; assign faculty and staff as appropriate to meet school objectives. Facility 21. Manage use of school facilities. Supervise maintenance of facilities to ensure a clean, orderly and safe campus. 22. Coordinate the maintenance operations of the school plant; assure proper management, maintenance and inventory of materials, equipments, buildings and grounds. Public Relations 23. Establish, coordinate and maintain working relations with community and parent groups, agencies, city officials and law enforcement officials. 24. Prepare and write letters, reports, bulletins and other communications on behalf of the school; arrange for school-level public relations and publicity for special events and achievements as appropriate. 25. Supervise and attend a variety of student events during the day or in the evening. 26. Attend, conduct and chair a variety of meetings with faculty and staff, parents and community representatives; coordinate and meet with school site advisory groups; resolve parent, student and staff complaints and represent the school at Board, district and community functions. 27. Assures prompt and effective attention to student-parent concerns. 28. Monitor school published handbooks, newspaper and yearbook. 29. Develop, implement and evaluate student and parent advisory groups. 30. Communicate and promote high expectations of self, students and staff. Recognize excellence and achievement. 31. Communicate, inform and involve parents, students and community members of District and school programs. Interpret school and district policies, programs and activities to staff and students. Budget 32. Plan and direct the business and fiscal operations of school; develop and administer site budgets; assure proper allocation of funds for instructional and non-instructional equipment and materials; maintain reports and perform all other obligations mandated by law, board policy or administrative directives. Assessment/Accountability/Student Performance 33. Direct the preparation of a variety of District, County, State and federally mandated records and reports regarding student attendance, welfare, discipline, safety, academic achievement, high school exit exam, and certification for graduation. 34. Direct the administration and evaluation of student assessment procedure and interpretation of resulting data to staff, parents and students. Other 35. Perform other job related duties as assigned on an equitable basis. REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Two years administrative experience preferred. 2. Three years of successful teaching experience, secondary level. 3. Willingness to update knowledge and skills commensurate with this position. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Bilingual. 2. Advanced degree. LICENSE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: 1. California Administrative Services Credential. 2. California Teaching Credential, secondary. 3. CLAD or authorization to provide services to English learners. 4. Possession and maintenance of a valid California driver’s license. ABILITY TO: • Implement, administer and evaluate curricular, instructional programs of the district including the Instructional Action Plan. • Plan and direct the budget and business operations. • Analyze situations accurately and prepare an effective course of action. • Interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures of public school laws and policies. • Demonstrate professional demeanor, attitude and conduct across all areas of responsibilities and authority. • Prepare and deliver oral presentations. • Use common office machines and file maintenance programs such as Aeries, EduSoft, Excel, Power Point, etc. and interpret data. • Compose clear, complete and concise correspondence and reports independently using correct English, grammar, syntax, punctuation and spelling. • Demonstrate strong organizational, communication, public relations and interpersonal skills. • Direct, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned certificated staff utilizing administrative and teaching standards. • Lead and manage the curricular and co-curricular program. • Direct, evaluate and supervise assigned classified staff. • Collaborate with appropriate district administrators in developing quality instructional programs that improve academic outcomes. • Maintain complete and accurate records to prepare comprehensive narrative and statistical reports. • Maintain student discipline. • Consult with staff members in planning, implementing, coordinating and evaluating the activities of their respective areas of responsibility. WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: Office environment; subject to interruptions; supervision responsibilities day and evenings.
