GENERAL PURPOSE

Under general supervision, performs skilled, journey-level duties in the installation, maintenance and repair of electronic systems, equipment and devices, including clocks, fire alarms, intrusion alarms; and performs related duties as assigned.

DISTINGUSHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is a full, journey-level class. Incumbents are expected to work independently in one of the classes’ primary duty categories (clocks, fire alarms, and intrusion alarms), and learn and perform the remaining class duty categories under the direction of the supervisor and other technicians.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.

  1. Installs, services and performs skilled, complex repairs on clocks, fire alarms and intrusion alarm systems.

  2. Localizes, isolates and diagnoses system malfunctions and determines appropriate repair procedures; replaces defective parts and restores equipment to proper operation.

  3. Designs and recommends electronic system improvements and enhancements; modifies existing equipment to improve performance and reliability.

  4. Operates a variety of hand and power tools, testing and measurement devices and other technical instruments used in the repair and maintenance of electronic equipment.

  5. Communicates with vendors and manufacturers regarding parts, pricing, purchases and product information.

  6. Schedules and performs preventive maintenance on assigned electronic systems and equipment; schedules outside repairs for equipment under warranty or contract.

  7. Maintains current knowledge of technological advancements and developments in the electronics field; recommends the purchase of new equipment and the disposal of damaged or obsolete items.

  8. Requisitions necessary material, equipment and supplies.

  9. Prepares and maintains records related to work requests and activities.

10.  Plans and lays out jobs from blueprints, drawings, sketches, work orders or verbal instructions; maintains records in the form of blueprints, plans and specifications for equipment and devices.

11.  Schedules and coordinates activities with other staff, sections, departments or agencies; ensures the timely and accurate completion of preventive maintenance activities.

12.  Monitor Alarms and responds to emergency situations as necessary.

13.  May assist in training or instructing others in the work.

14.  Provides specialized assistance and support to other sections, divisions and departments.

OTHER DUTIES

  1. Operates a vehicle to travel to various District sites.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  1. Practices, theories, methods, techniques, tools and equipment used in the installation, testing, maintenance and repair of a wide variety of electrical and electronic systems, equipment and devices common to a large school district, including clocks, fire alarms, and intrusion alarms.

  2. Operating characteristics of electronic components.

  3. Safety practices, safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work.

  4. Electrical and electronic shop practices, procedures and equipment; shop mathematics.

  5. Computer applications related to the work.

Ability to:

  1. Test, diagnose, calibrate and repair a wide variety of electrical and electronic equipment and devices common to a large school district.

  2. Use modern, state-of-the-art electronic testing and diagnostic instruments.

  3. Identify and implement effective courses of action to complete assigned work.

  4. Read and interpret plans, specifications and manuals.

  5. Exercise independent judgment and initiative within established guidelines.

  6. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of the work.

  7. Coordinate work assignments with other sections, divisions or departments.

Education, Training, and Experience:

  • Graduation from high school, G.E.D. equivalent or higher, and

  • Two (2) years of journey-level experience in the installation, diagnosis, maintenance and repair of clock, fire alarm, and intrusion alarm equipment common to a large school district.

Experience with school districts is highly desirable.

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:

  • A valid California Driver’s License
  • Proof of automobile liability insurability coverage.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS

  • Perform moderate to heavy physical exertion.

  • Work at indoor and outdoor environment, with possible dry, cold, and wet weather, and temperatures ranging from freezing to 121 °F.
  • Work at different District sites of various configurations and sizes.
