Position is for approximately 4 hours per day. RESOURCE SPECIALIST PROGRAM INSTRUCTIONAL AIDE – SPECIAL EDUCATION JOB DESCRIPTION: BASIC FUNCTION: Under general supervision, assists students with disabilities to meet their physical and emotional requirements in the classroom; assist teachers in the supervision and training of students in special educational programs; relieving teachers of routine paraprofessional instructional and clerical duties; performs a variety of instructional support duties in developing academic skills, life skills and/or physical care activities; and to do related duties as required. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES - included but not limited to: Assists the teacher in the areas of a special educational program in which assigned; Assists in the various areas of the instructional program; Works with individuals, small groups, or entire class in presenting instructional materials; Assists the teacher with accommodating and modifying methods for students with special needs; Assist the teacher in the training of academic, social and physical skills necessary to care for individual needs; Understand effective methods to deal with verbal outbursts and other forms of resisting authority; Accompany students to/from and on the bus, playground and/or cafeteria; Assist and instruct students with mild and moderate disabilities in performing activities such as moving about, using bathroom facilities, eating, toileting, or other activities as assigned; Clean work areas to maintain a sanitary environment; Performs record keeping duties as assigned; Grades tests and records scores; Makes telephone calls; Operates office machines; Assists in computer learning activities; Assists in maintaining a supply inventory and requisition of materials; Operates audio visual, digital, and electronic equipment; Performs other related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES Knowledge of: Correct English usage, basic math, spelling, grammar, and punctuation; Safe and sanitary practices in classroom and playground activities; Problems and concerns of students with special needs; General needs and behavior of children; Basic technology skills and usage. Ability to: Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with staff, students, administrators and the public; Perform a variety of routine classroom services for children; Understand and follow oral and written directions; Maintain confidentiality about all personal information, assessment results, medical history, and other records concerning students and their families; Maintain interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy; Maintain consistent, punctual and regular attendance. EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS Education High School Diploma or Equivalent; 2 years of college (48 semester units) OR AA degree (or higher) OR Must pass the Proficiency Test for Instructional Aides (No Child Left Behind exam). Desired Experience Six months of full time paid experience performing similar duties or one year paid part time or volunteer experience involving organized activities with children preferred; Course work in the areas of tutoring, child guidance or related subjects may be substituted for the preferred work experience. WORKING CONDITIONS Environment: Classroom environment both indoors and outdoors environment; Subject to constant interruptions and anti-social/hostile behavior. Physical Abilities: Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of office equipment; Occasional work lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling to assist students. Bending at the waist, stooping, kneeling or crouching; Near and far visual acuity. Hazards Potential contact with blood while administering first aid to injured students; Subject to exposure to communicable or infectious diseases. Mental Abilities: Oral comprehension and expression; Written comprehension; Speech recognition; Auditory understanding.
